Fitness Friday: Walk It Out

I regularly get asked about my fitness routine and how I got started on my current healthy living regime. I grew up as an athlete – Gymnastics followed by volleyball and springboard diving – So moving is my natural state of being. I start to feel mentally and physically “off” after about 24 hours out of the gym or off the trails.

But that doesn’t mean it was easy to get to where I am now. It doesn’t mean that it’s a simple, one-step process.

Being healthy is a way of life, it doesn’t mean squeezing in a workout when you have time, it means making movement a part of your daily life. Every day.

It may not be a quick fix, but you do need to start somewhere – So the question is, where is a good place to start?

Not only is this the most basic form of exercise for human beings, it’s also one of the best things you can do for your body. And bonus – It’s low intensity so it’s a great first step for those looking to get healthy AND a good way to easy back into your fitness regime post-injury or post-baby.

I’ve had a spinal injury since college and after a re injury and surgery two years ago – Walking and standing were the top suggestions from my surgeon. Before physical therapy or massages, I was asked to add walking to my daily routine.
Luckily I live in a walking friendly city. Given its size and how close everything I need is, walking is the most logical way to traverse SF.

I walk to work. To the grocery store. To events. To BART when I’m going to head to the outskirts or the airport. It’s all about breaking your Uber/taxi/driving habits and pulling out your flats.

So my challenge for you is this – How can YOU add a little bit of walking each day?
