Seasonal Dietary Shifts

I’m a big fan of listening to my body.

I love to plan and write To Do Lists and schedule things out… But one of the biggest, and best, lessons that I’ve learned in recent years is that list-making is all well and good, but I also need to learn to stop and really listen to my body.

I used to force myself through workouts I was too tired for and the results weren’t pretty. I’ve also eaten diets that didn’t make me feel my best because I thought that’s what I was supposed to do.

Now when I’m planning my grocery list or staring blankly at the open fridge, I ask myself a very simple question: What sounds good?

And because I started listening to my body instead of my excessively analytical mind, I’ve noticed some interesting things about myself and my cravings.

My seasonal wants are basically the opposite of what they’re “supposed” to be. I crave salads and smoothies in the Winter, but soups and heavier fare during the Spring and Summer. Odd, right?

The other thing I’ve learned about myself is that I go through phases. Sometimes they’re long, sometimes they’re short, sometimes they repeat themselves.

When I first went from a long-time vegetarian to flirting with a vegan diet in my mid-twenties, I tried all the fakes. My fridge was always filled with protein substitutes – Tofu, soy, tempeh etc.

I lived on Morning Star.

I can’t put a number on exactly how long that phase lasted, but I can tell you that it’s been YEARS since I ate any of those products. Just didn’t crave them at all. I focused on whole-food based proteins and skipped the faux substitutes.

And then…

You guessed it. Suddenly I’m craving them again! Since I like to give my body what it wants – Since you know, I’m a much more manageable human being when I’m not hungry – I’ve been sampling some new products out there.

But I’ve also been trying new recipes to fulfill my sudden craving for heavier protein-filled meals. Here are a few of my current favorites:
