4 Tips to Start Your Healthy Living Journey

Sometimes getting started on a new path is the hardest part. It’s that first step that can be the most intimidating. Changing your habits, breaking your routine, making better choices every day…

It can be a daunting prospect.

My goal today is to share a few things that you can do to make a positive impact on your health. Today.

These are small shifts in your daily habits that you should think about as a lifestyle change, not as a diet or a short-term fix. They’re not a band-aid, and they’re not a magic bullet. What they will do, however, is make you much healthier in the long-term if you make them a part of your life.

So, without further ado, here are my top four tips for starting your journey to a healthy, happy life:

  1. Sleep – Your body can’t recover unless you give it sufficient time to rest. Without sufficient sleep it can’t recover from workouts or from stress. So schedule time to start winding down each night and create a sleep routine. Need some ideas to get started? Check out my Nighttime Ritual post.
  2. Drink Water – You may think that dehydration just means dry skin, but that’s not the case. Not consuming enough water can impact your sleeping habits, reduce your ability to concentrate, and even cause headaches and constipation. Not good. If you have trouble getting enough H2O try an infused water for a fun twist.
  3. Lay Off Processed Food – Highly processed foods and food-like substances filled with refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and trans fats, are causing an epidemic in this country. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and some kinds of cancer – All considered Western Diseases – Are preventable and can be treated with a healthy diet. So before your weekly trip to the drive-through or when you head for the chip aisle instead of the produce section at the grocery store, just stop and think about which choice will help you meet your healthy living goals.
  4. Move – Don’t worry, I’m not telling you to go sign up for a marathon. Or that you need an expensive gym membership. Need a first step? Go for a walk a few times a week. Then extend the amount of time you spend walking and the number of walks a week. You will be amazed at the change – The time outside will help you clear your head, decompress, and relax. Other options? Check out my A Week of Workouts and 7 Days of Workouts posts for some ideas for fun, healthy workouts. Another great option is a workout date!
