Breaking out of a Funk

Last week was… Rough…

It doesn’t matter what your political leanings are, who you voted for, or whether last week was filled with celebrations or devastation – It has been an emotional few days, weeks, and months.

Rather than focusing on the specifics of the election, what I’d like to do today is talk about how to break out of a funk.

Whether you’re feeling stressed at work, or worrying about the future, or even dreading the holidays… It’s easy to fall into a funk.

Getting out? Not always so easy.

After last week I did some soul-searching and put some time & energy into breaking myself out of my bad mood.

I may not be the most happy-to-lucky girl around, but I do pride myself on not being a slave to my emotions. And I have to confess that I felt trapped by them last week. I couldn’t think positive thoughts or find any hope, which is a scary feeling.

Here’s what I learned and some helpful ideas for breaking out of your own negative ruts.

Feel the Feelings:

That may sound like a strange thing to promote, but you need to feel sad or devastated or broken before you can move forward and heal. If you hide from your emotions, they will always come back to haunt you. So take the time to experience them. Be sad. Be miserable. But dive into those emotions knowing that you’ll come through the other side.

Remember What You Love:

While I was grasping at straws, trying to find something to put my focus on, I realized I’d somehow forgotten my go-to therapy. Writing! I’ve always processed my emotions by putting pen to paper {or fingers to keyboard}. Sometimes that means journaling, sometimes that means affirmations, sometimes that means starting a new short story.

So dig deep and remember what you love. Art? Music? Poetry? Writing? Running? Hiking? Spending time with family? Whatever it is, make time for it in your life.

Do Something:

No matter what’s got you down, there’s a way to turn the situation around to help others and give back. Feeling unappreciated at work? Go out of your way to remind your friends and family how much you appreciate them. Stressed about the future? Volunteer at a nonprofit and help people who could never dream to have your life. Overwhelmed by your responsibilities? Take up a healthy hobby to give yourself some self-love.

It’s about getting outside of your own mind and giving yourself some much-needed perspective.

Tell me YOUR tips! How do you break out of a funk?
