Smoothie Ingredients: Superfoods, Supplements & More

The concept of “superfoods” may be in flux, but there’s no denying that there are a lot of healthy, nutrient-packed, good-for-you things out there that you should try to incorporate into your diet.

Here are a few of my favorite smoothie ingredients and supplements – From roots to berries to algae! 🙂

Maca – This is a root from the Andes that has been used for thousands of years, but is new to Western countries like ours. It helps regulate hormones, energy levels, and boosts your immune system. I love the taste, it’s similar to a light, natural butterscotch. I add it to smoothies, oats, or chia seed puddings. While it is available as a supplement, I’ve only ever tried the powder.

Goji Berries – These little powerhouses are high in antioxidants, vitamins & minerals. I like topping oats, banana ice cream & smoothies with dried goji berries, or adding the raw, organic powder to smoothies. Note: The dried berries get VERY COLD when you add them to a smoothie, so be careful of your teeth.

Noni – This is an antioxidant rich fruit that helps boost your immune system and has been touted as having anti-aging benefits. You can find it in three forms: Noni juice, noni powder & noni supplements.

Chlorella – This fresh water algae is packed with protein, Vitamin A, B2, B3, Iron, Magnesium, and Zinc, and helps with detoxification. Tastes AWFUL but this is seriously good for you. Comes in powder form or supplements. Most smoothies will mask the taste, but you can slowly increase your “dose” until you’re used to it. J Very similar to spirulina, another blue-green algae (which also comes in supplements or powder).

Wheatgrass – High in vitamins & minerals, wheatgrass is also extremely rich in protein, contains 17 amino acids & has a huge amount of chlorophyll. This one also does not taste great, so I recommend the capsules over the powder.

A few other highly nutrient dense goodies that I always have around are – Chia Seeds, Cacao Nibs, and Hemp Seeds.
