Ways to Improve Gut Health

“All disease begins in the gut” – Hippocrates

While it may seem strange to take advice on gut health from a Greek doctor who practiced medicine in 460 BC, he is considered the father of modern medicine and is the credited as the basis of the Hippocratic Oath.

Whether he really said that quote or whether he revolutionized medicine aren’t really the point – The point is that it has long been known that your stomach health is directly related to your overall health.

I mean, do you feel healthy when you have an upset stomach or digestive issues or severe bloating? Nope. You feel decidedly unhealthy.

So here are some quick and pretty easy ways that you can improve your gut (and overall) health.

  • Eat a wide range of foods – Eating the same foods every day or only eating a small part of the rainbow can limit your consumption of necessary micronutrients
  • Fiber – High fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and beans are a great way to aid in digestion
  • Cut out sugar – Limit your consumption of artificial sweeteners and refined sugar
  • Eat fermented foods – Adding healthy fermented foods into your diet will have an immediate effect. Some things to try are kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, tempeh, and kombucha.
  • Include whole grains – Good-for-you-carbs like whole oats, brown rice, bulgar, quinoa, couscous, and corn are delicious additions to your week
  • Supplement – Try a probiotic supplement when you’re starting out on your gut-healing journey
  • Control stress – We have been hearing more and more in recent years about the negative impacts of stress on our lives. It impacts our sleep, our health, even our skin. Learning to control your stress levels will do wonders for your overall health so try meditation, yoga, or maybe aromatherapy and massage.
