Chic Coatings

There is very little in this world that I love more than perfectly fitted outerwear. It can complete an outfit, it can be the central focus of an outfit, it can make people turn their heads on the street just to get another glimpse. (Am I the only one whose boyfriend says I look at girls more than he does?)

So I’m here today to share with you some of the gorgeous coats and jackets I’ve spotted lately and some great choices in stores that you can pick up to give your fall wardrobe the perfect finishing touch.

(1) For a chic topper that finishes your look perfectly, try something with plaid, tweed or maybe some embellishments.

While Olivia's outfit is great overall, the coat is spectacular, one of my absolute favorites.

 Source

The coat is a little pretty, a little glam and absolutely perfect for throwing over a dress like Olivia did or slim pants and a sweater for fall.

In lieu of the pricey Louis Vuitton Resort 2012 version Miss Olivia  showed off in Paris, here are a few similar styles for us mere mortals.

Plaid Passporter Coat - $300 @ Madewell

Double-breasted Plaid Peacoat - $140 @ Victoria's Secret

Candie's Faux-Fur Plaid Coat - $100 @ Kohl's

 (2) Want to stand out in a crowd, you little showstopper, you? Try a standout coat in lipstick red or a jewel tone that complements your coloring.

Rosie's red leather from Burberry is a great twist on a classic trench.

 Source

Rosie shows us the perfect way to spice up a traditional piece like a trench coat here, add a splash of color, an interesting fabric or a patterned design.

As the face of Burberry Body we can assume that she got a good deal on her coat, but if you’re not in the market for a Burberry classic quite yet, check out some of the alternative options below.

MICHAEL Michael Kors Single Breasted Trench - $120 (sale price) @ Nordstrom

Classic Trench - $100 @ Asos.com

Volcom "Seeing Double" Leopard-Print Trench Coat - $100 @ Bloomingdale's

(3) Are you loving the retro 60’s & 70’s looks for fall? Than this coat’s for you…

Sienna seems to be transitioning back into the boho style that made her a fashion icon and this look is a great example.

If you’re interested in a hippie-inspired a la Kate Moss or Sienna Miller, look a faux fur chubby, coat, snood or scarf are all great choices this season. As I said here, faux fur is a pretty good investment, warmth is usually in. 🙂

The key to finding the right faux fur coat is getting a length that hits you at the right place to flatter your frame, that doesn’t look cheap or automatically fake, and that isn’t so bulky that you look like you’re auditioning for the role of the Abominable Snowman.

Faux Fur Tuck Stole - $50 @ TopShop

Faux Fur Coat In Midi Length - $175 (on sale) @ Asos.com

Kristen Blake Belted Faux Fur Vest - $110 @ Nordstrom

 (4) Are you inspired by low-key styles and live for mixing and matching pieces in interesting ways? Proceed!

Emma Roberts & Olivia Munn rocked old school denim jackets for - what else - a Levi's event.

 Source

If you initial reaction to a jean jacket is “ack – no 80’s styles pease,” remember that the Olsens’ just launched a high-end denim collection earlier this year for their Elizabeth and James line and these chic little toppers are showing up EVERYWHERE.

Thing to keep in mind? It’s going to be very challenging to pair a jean jacket, even a darker wash, with a pair of jeans. Odds are, you’ll end up looking like Uncle Jesse, so stick to mixing this piece with dresses, stripes or pants of a different fabric.

GUESS Crop Denim Jacket - $120 @ Bloomingdale's

Three Dots Stretch Denim L/S Motorcycle Jacket - $75 (on sale) @ 6pm.comLauren by Ralph Lauren Corduroy Trim Denim Jacket - $80 (on sale) @ Nordstrom

As for you gentlemen out there, don’t despair, check out the Million Looks for a breakdown on mens outerwear for this fall here.  Personally, I think the two sexiest coats on a man are a (faux) leather bomber, Top Gun style, and a classic wool peacoat. Yum!

Happy hunting my little fashionistas, be sure to share any great finds! 🙂

Gym Goddess – Part II

Welcome to Week II of How to Become a Gym Goddess (you can check out Week 1 here). To recap, this is the journey of an individual who has taken some time off from the gym, is in the process of making some big changes to her diet and would like to start getting back into shape.

Week I was primarily about measuring her abilities and testing her boundaries in a safe, controlled manner. In week two we increased the amount of cardio and worked on her core so that she has a good base to start doing weight in another few weeks.

 Source

*Note: Please talk to your physician prior to attempting a new fitness routine.

Day 1:

10 minute cardio warm up – moderate intensity

5 rounds – As quickly as possible w/out sacrificing form

  • 15 box jumps
  • 10 push-ups (on knees if necessary)
  • 20 sit-ups (chin up to the ceiling)
  • 20 squats

10 minute cardio warm down

Day 2: HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) – Pick a machine and go-go-go

5 minute warm up – moderate intensity, you want to get your heart rate up

  • 30 seconds as fast as possible
  • 1 minute 30 seconds recovery – moderate speed
  • 30 seconds as fast as possible
  • 1 minute 30 seconds recovery – moderate speed

Repeat for 15 minutes of intervals

5 minute cool down

Stretching

Day 3: Stability ball play time! (See The Fitnessista’s Focus On Medicine Balls for inspiration & safety tips)

10 minute cardio warm up – moderate intensity

Using a medicine/bosu ball, complete the following as quickly as possible:

  • 30 push ups  w/ feet on ball
  • 30 crunchies (chin to the ceiling)
  • 30 hamstring curls (laying on back)
  • 30 seconds plank w/ feet on the ball

10 minute cardio warm down

Stretching

Weekend Mini Workout: To be completed at any point Saturday or Sunday (***Bonus points if you get a workout buddy to join you and race!)

Sprint the length of the street, walk back to your starting point, 5 burpees (how to) – Repeat 10x

Starting w/ your feet together, jump as far as you can & repeat for the length of the street. To the end of the street and back to your starting point = 1, complete 5x

Results: After finishing her second week of regular workouts Liz was even more motivated and enthusiastic than before. The number one thing that she noticed? Even if she was dreading a workout and was exhausted by the time the last rep finished, she ended every workout more excited to start the next. Endorphins at their best!

* Trick To Try: Set an alarm on your cell or an Outlook calendar reminder for multiple times a day and spend a few minutes thinking about your core and your posture – especially important if you’re sitting in front of a computer or in class room for hours a day. Flex your stomach muscles and concentrate on your abdominal wall for 30 seconds, take a few deep breaths and repeat a handful of times, until you begin to feel fatigued. By staying in touch with your body over the course of the day you’ll be less likely to hunch or maintain harmful posture for extended period of time.

And in a fortuitous turn of events, The Fitnessista also recently did a post on getting back into shape, if you want to check out her expert advice here it is!

Looks of the Week

Need some pretty to help you get through the end of your Monday? Follow me…

I LOVE this look, its cool, chic and a perfect transition to fall. Plus I'm a sucker for day clutches.

Rock that cover Adele! I don't read Cosmo but when I saw this cover at the newstand all I could think was "wow - it's about time." So hot!

 Source

I think this is a great dress, its interesting and unique and perfectly stand-out for a red carpet appearance. On the real life side, I could absolutely see this dress working for a cocktail event at an upscale hotel bar, something with dark carpeting and low lights.

20’s looks were all the rage at the LACMA’s on Sunday and my absolute favorites were Camilla Belle, Evan Rachel Wood and Zoe Saldana.

Glittering, gorgeous, Gucci – Say that three times fast!

I’m absolutely adoring The Sartorialist’s All The Pretty Photographers series. There are some great shots of these fashionable ladies doing their thing, so enjoy…

P.S. That first look is so me, wow, a Style File may be in order!
