Post-Workout Beauty Hacks

As someone who very regularly leaves the office midday for a workout or a run, I thought I’d share some of the post-gym beauty hacks I’ve learned over the years.

While I’ve definitely returned to my desk with a bright red glowing face after a grueling run, for the most part adequate preparation and a few minutes of pampering is enough to get you back at work looking fabulous.

Whether you have a locker, a gym bag, or just a giant handbag, having the right products on hand is important. So save those Sephora & Nordstrom samples, they’re the perfect size!

I always take a COLD shower after a workout. Especially after a run since I’m prone to ending up with a red face. The cold water not only feels amazing, but helps cool off your body and reduce redness.

Skin Care & Makeup:

I hate hate hate piling on makeup after a sweat session. Not only does my skin feel radiant afterwards, but the products also just slide right off.

So I keep Josie Maran Bare Naked Argan Wipes at the ready to clean up any messes, my Laura Mercier  Secret Camouflage compact for touching up under the eyes {my problem area for sure}, super moisturizing lip balm, and last but not least deodorant.

I also have sunscreen in my bag for when I do midday runs. I apply Algenist Anti-Aging Moisturizer with SPF 20 around 5am each morning, but reapply with Algenist Ultra Lightweight SPF 50 before a 12pm run.

My two hair tricks are (1) Make sure you have hair ties & sporty headbands on hand for during and after a workout, and (2) DRY SHAMPOO.

Note: You want hair ties that don’t kink your mane, I’m a huge fan of France Luxe’s line of non-damaging L. Erikson Grab & Go Ponies. You can find them in my bathroom, my desk, my purse, and my gym locker!

Seriously, if you workout as often as I do, you know that the struggle is real to follow your stylist’s “don’t wash your hair everyday” commandment. Enter dry shampoo. My favorites are Kevin Murphy, L’Oreal, and Macadamia Dry Shampoo.

Skin Care Junkie | Latest Sephora Order

I’m a total Sephora junkie, it’s where I order 90% of my skin care products and makeup, so I thought I’d share my latest order with you. I don’t love the “haul” blog posts or YouTube videos, but when I see someone who’s opinion I value in a particular area, I do like to see what type of products they’re buying. I thought it would be a good chance to share how I shop for skin care and beauty, and my first impressions on a handful of products.

To begin with, I adore the Sephora website. Their searching capabilities are outstanding – You can adjust the product list by your goals, your age, ingredients you want or don’t want, and more. I also love reading reviews on the site, if I’m on the fence about a product I’ll sort the reviews by Lowest and see what people didn’t like about it.

In general, try not to buy products with sulfates, parabens, or phthalates. But sometimes I let something slip through if I’ve heard raves about a product.

Josie Maran Whipped Mud Mask Argan Hydrating and Detoxifying Treatment: First up, this smells amazing. It also feels really great, and has a bit of a granular texture which is nice for rubbing on your skin before washing off. Overall I really like this, though there isn’t an immediate change your skin.

Tarte Hampton’s Weekender Contour Palette: I adore Tarte products and this Summer-ready palette is no different. Great packaging, beautiful colors, great staying power. Definitely recommend this baby!

Sunday Riley U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil: I’ve never tried Sunday Riley before but have heard and read great reviews of these products in the past. I decided to try two new products, including this blemish clearing face oil. You can use it as an all over product or for spot treatments, and I tried it both ways. First thing to mention – This has a very strong smell. One of the main ingredients it tea tree oil so if you’re not ready, it’s a bit overwhelming. That being said, I like this so far. I didn’t cause any break-outs and the spot treatment function seemed to work well.

Sunday Riley Good Genes All-in-One Lactic Acid Treatment: The second Sunday Riley product that I ordered was this anti-aging lactic acid serum. Again, this product has a fairly dramatic scent, but I’m enjoying it. It feels great going on and I haven’t seen any of the dryness that some of the reviewers mentioned. I started out using it once or twice a week and am now using it every other day in the mornings.

bareMinerals Mineral Veil Setting Powder: I really enjoy bareMinerals so this setting powder seemed like a no-brainer. I don’t wear foundation or BB/CC cream daily and sometimes need a little oil control by the end of the day, so I thought I’d give this lightweight powder a try. It has a bit of shine, almost like a highlighter, but it’s really subtle and pretty so no objections here!

Clinique Take the Day Off Makeup Remover: I think of this as the ultimate make-up remover, its old school, but still great. For traveling I wanted a little bottle of makeup remover so I swooped up this baby. The Boscia Charcoal Cleanser and Eve Lom Cleanser are still my all-time favorites, but when you’re traveling for events, like weddings, and are packing on the make-up, it’s good to have a dedicated make-up remover as well.

Skin Care Junkie | Daily Beauty Routine

I love trying new products and mixing up my beauty routine, but I also know that you need to give products some time to work their magic. My usual approach is to develop a morning and evening routine that works for me and then use it daily for 8-12 weeks, or until I run out of products. And then I try cycling in new brands and products. There are some items that I always go back to, but I also like trying out new goodies.

Here’s a peek at my current beauty routine that I’m really enjoying.

Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser + VanityPlanet Cleanse, Exfoliate & Massage Ultimate Skin Spa System:

This combination is a game changer for me. I love cleansers and have been very preoccupied with keeping my skin clean lately. These two products together – The cleanser and the silicon skin spa brush – Is amazing. My skin feels fresh, invigorated, and ready to go after this daily ritual.

Balanced Guru Facial Toner:

After cleansing, I spritz my face with the Balanced Guru Facial Toner. It gives me a really refreshed feeling and smells great, it’s almost therapeutic. 🙂

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence:

Once my toner sinks in I’ll drench a cotton round with the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence and gentle press it into the skin of my face and neck. It absorbs quickly and leaves your skin feeling very clean.

Dr. Roebuck’s Serum:

I love the smell and feel of this product. I feel like I’ve just left the spa after applying a thin layer of serum. It leaves your skin silky soft! I’m dying to some of their other products.

SK-II Eye Cream:

A small dot of SK-II Eye Cream under each eye and patted in with my ring finger is the next step in my routine.

Origins Plantscription SPF 25 Power Anti-Aging Cream // Caudalie Resveratrol Lift Face Lifting Soft Cream // Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil:

After giving my serum and eye cream a few minutes to absorb, and maybe running my jade roller gently over my face, I’ll move onto the final step.

In the morning it’s an SPF – I’m really liking the Origins Plantscription. I never leave the apartment with SPF. Ever.

At night I’ll either apply the Caudalie Moisturizer or the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil.  I’ll generally go with the moisturizer, but if I’m feeling dry or traveling, I’ll use the facial oil.

Reef Safe Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a topic that’s near and dear to my heart. This is, without a doubt, the best skin care tip my mom ever gave me – Wear sunscreen every day.

And while finding the perfect daily and workout suncreens are important – Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging SFP and FRE Skin Care for me – There’s also another variety that you should be paying attention to these days. And that’s using reef safe products when you’re in the ocean.

As far as I’m concerned, this is non-negotiable. This is especially close to home for me because I’m a diver, so I see the reefs and plants and animals that are being affected by our products in their water.

So that you can make informed and educated decisions when it comes to your purchases, here’s a list of great products and some links and reading materials in case you need some convincing. One of the major ingredients to avoid is Oxybenzone.
