Blogger Confessions {XVII}: College Edition

Welcome back to the聽blogger confessions聽series! Its been a while… 馃檪

This Confessions post is all about college factoids and ridiculousness from my four wonderful years at the University of California at Berkeley.

When I was in college I had very definite plans about joining the CIA. I also wanted to be the first female accepted in the Navy SEALS.

I lived in Rome, Italy for the Spring semester of my Junior year studying Art History. Which, incidentally, was not my major.

While Berkeley was ringed by cute little caf茅s filled with students studying up a storm, I was a library girl and routinely studied in the smaller History and Classics libraries. Fewer people, more table space, and I frequently needed to locate more arcane texts for my papers and studying sessions.

I joined UC Berkeley as a member of the diving team but due to an injury – The same spinal injury I’m still dealing with today – I never got a chance to represent UCB in competition.

I wrote an Honors thesis for each of my majors and the subject of my Classical Civilizations thesis is, in part, the basis of one of the novels that I’m working on writing right now. If I had gone straight into a PhD program after my undergraduate program as I’d originally anticipated, it may have been the basis for my dissertation.

After a few months’ hiatus, I’m back with a new Confessions post! Woo!

Today’s confessions are all about my childhood – From聽daydreams to sport stories聽that even I laugh about.

In聽5th grade I聽did a report on Michelle Campi, an Olympic gymnast who competed for the same gym as I did, and she lent me her Team USA competition leotard to wear for my presentation. #BestDayEVER {Additional confession: I wore it under my clothes all day…}

I was a tomboy聽as a kid聽and nearly cried聽when I had to buy a dress as a 4th grader to travel to gymnastics competitions. We had to “dress” for our plane trips and my long-suffering mother had to drag me around to find something suitable. I still remember the dress – It was an off white Henley material with flowers on it. This is especially funny given I’m SUCH a dress girl now…

My parents owned a bookstore while I was growing up in Sacramento so I spent my weekends sitting on the floor reading anything I could get my hands on.

My first international trip was to the Yucatan with my family when I was in 7th grade. The trip included scaling Mayan temples, getting the worst sunburn of my life, learning to snorkel, and eating primarily eggs & fruit for two weeks because I’d recently decided to become a vegetarian. Oh, and fun fact, I refuse to pose for pictures for the duration of the trip. I wasn’t a terribly pleasant teenager.

Growing up I wanted to be a doctor. And the first female president of the United States. Tsk. So strange that “Compliance officer” wasn’t at the top of my list…

Though my favorite color is green, there’s probably more black in my wardrobe than anything else. And I prefer my flowers white.

I’m a comic book nerd through-and-through, and will聽see any movie that comes out based on comics or graphic novels.

While I’d list聽Alexander Dumas as my all-time favorite author –聽The聽Count of Monte Cristo, Man聽in the Iron Mask etc.聽– My favorite genre to read is in fact聽fantasy. I grew up on a steady diet of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Philip Pullman, and Patricia C. Wrede. Thanks Daddy!

Welcome back!

I love getting a chance to learn more about my favorite writers so I started this series so that you could get to know me a little bit better. Read on to learn about my loves, passions, and pastimes.

Growing up, my junk food cravings were always salty and savory treats. But I developed a sweet tooth a few years ago and started baking up a storm. Or maybe I developed the sweet tooth after falling in love with baking…

Working out is my happy place. Maybe it’s genetics or maybe it’s the fact that 95% of my childhood was spent either in the gym or running around outside, but being active is what makes me the happiest. Doesn’t matter if it’s going to the gym, taking a class, or hiking around San Francisco.

My biggest indulgence is doing nothing. With all of my projects and obligations and responsibilities, the ultimate relaxation is just letting it all go and zoning out with a book or movie or my laptop.

While I don’t count calories, I do actively track what I eat. Why? To monitor my micronutrient consumption and ensure that I’m getting enough calcium, iron, magnesium, and Vitamins.

Welcome back to the Blogger Confession series – Here’s where you’ll get to know me a little better, learn some funny facts about yours truly, and get a peek behind the wizard’s curtain!

It always聽seems to surprise聽people to learn聽that my full-time job is completely outside the fashion industry. I’ve actually been working for a San Francisco-based聽financial institution聽since I graduated from Berkeley 9 years ago. All of the writing, blogging, and styling projects that I love to share with you are actually聽extracurricular activities.

Green juice is one of my favorite healthy indulgences. I love the taste and make it at home whenever I have time, but buy the cold-pressed varieties a couple of times a week. Why do I call it an indulgence if it’s so healthy and good-for-you? Because they can be pricey!

After being stuck on the sidelines with a back injury the last few years I’ve caught the travel bug again big time! My Wanderlust has already taken me to Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans, and London this year, and I have trips to Albuquerque, New York, and San Diego planned for the rest of the year.

I only wear bracelets on my left hand. I’m serious.

I’m an accessories girl. I love clothes, but I could live in basic black separates for the rest of my life so long as I have access to fun, eye-catching jewelry, scarves, handbags, and shoes.
