Fitness Friday | Activewear Essentials

I’m a creature of habit and when I find something that I love, I tend to carry on happily until something jolts me out of my routine. This approach applies to my style, and even more so to my activewear choices. When I like a piece, I buy multiples. Sometimes lots of multiples.

So to celebrate Fitness Friday, I thought I’d share what I’m currently repeating, ad nauseum, at the gym right now.

Tops:

I am quite devoted to Lucy Activewear tops and was devastated to hear that they were closing their stores. But relieved when I found out that they’re being absorbed into North Face, so I have high hopes that I can still find my favorite tops.

Luckily (Lucily?) I have three of my favorite tank and two of my favorite t-shirt in my at-home inventory right now.

Bottoms:

I’m a Lulu leggings girl. While I’m not a huge fan of some of their pieces, the running tights are amazing. I have three pairs of the Tight Stuff Tights and three pairs of the Fast & Free 7/8 Tights for non-running activities.

I’m not weird. You’re weird.

Under Things:

Victoria’s Secret Sport has GREAT pieces for under your favorite gear. I also love Alo Yoga and Adidas. {Check out more of my sports bra favorites here}

I also really like the Fabletics seamless underwear and I have 2-3 of their crop top length sports bras that are comfy, flattering, and functional.

Virgin Sport San Francisco | #GoFitYourself

Happy Fitness Friday everyone! I’m here today to share some exciting news! Virgin Sport is coming to San Francisco this Fall for the Virgin Sport San Francisco‘s inaugural three-day Festival of Fitness October 14-15.

The Festival:

This will be Virgin Sport’s first US event and they’ll be galvanizing the community to celebrate local art, music, culture, and fitness. The festival weekend will include everything from food & drink boothes and entertainment to fitness classes and races.

The Events:

For the runners out there, there are two races at the festival that you can sign up for – The Twin Peaks Mile and the SF Bay Half Marathon. They’re taking place on Saturday, October 14th and Sunday, October 15th respectively.

The Message:

Dreamt up by Sir Richard Branson and Co-Founder Freddie Andrewes, Virgin Sport was launched, along with CEO Mary Wittenberg, with the goal of combining the fun and adventure of fitness with Virgin’s very own brand of moxy.

Between now and the Festival, Virgin Sport is launching the #GoFitYourself campaign on social media to share their healthy living message and encourage people to get fit and have fun.

Fitness Friday Spotlight: TRX

I’ve been hearing great things about TRX for a few years now – Clearly it wasn’t just a short-lived trend. In fact, I’d even walked past a giant TRX gym and watched with wide eyes as the participants bungeed their way through a workout hanging from brightly colored suspension cords.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when I discovered that my local Bodyfi gym had a TRX class and eagerly signed up with absolutely no idea what I was in for. What can I say? I live on the edge! 🙂

The class was a combination of floor work and suspension moves, including everything from lunges and squats to rows and chest press to v-ups and burpees. It was fast-paced, intense, and a serious, sweat-drenching workout.

I’m hooked and here’s why…

  • It’s a 30 minute class offered at various times throughout the week. That means I can squeeze it in when I don’t have time for a full hour of yoga or Pilates but still want to get my sweat on.
  • You feel like you did a serious workout when you’re done. I LOVE that feeling. Give me a sweaty, endorphin pumping workout afterglow and I’m a happy girl.
  • The instructor at BodyFi is great – Funny, enthusiastic, and bouncing/dancing/jumping around through the workout. He’s great at not only keeping you going, but distracting you when the going gets rough.

TRX Studio: Financial District BodyFi

TRX Fashion: It’s always good to wear comfortable clothes to workout in, but with TRX it’s even more important because if you’re hanging from a bungee cord you can’t adjust! My recommendation would be to wear something fitted that stays in place. I’ve been LIVING in my black & white Lorna Jane tank and Zella Capris. {These Zella workout leggings are killer and on sale – I highly recommend them!}

TRX Fuel: When it comes to high-intensity workouts you don’t want to eat something immediately before or you run the risk of it not staying down. I’ve been enjoying a tasty protein pudding {Vegan ice cream + protein powder – Official recipe coming soon, promise!} or a green smoothie post-workout. They’re both refreshing, delicious ways to replenish your fluids and reward your body after a job well done.

Fitness Friday Spotlight: Yoga

One of the most common requests that I get (usually via Instagram) is what’s my fitness routine. I like to be consistent but still give myself room to try new things and recover from especially brutal workouts. In a given week my workout routine includes walking (2-5 miles a day Monday through Friday & 5-15 miles Saturday & Sunday), weight training, and extra activities like yoga, Pilates, and videos from Blogilates & Tone It Up!

So far, my favorite 2014 bucket list item is trying a new form of exercise each month. It’s forcing me to get creative, step outside my comfort zone, and actually try the things I’ve always wanted to do but never gotten around to.

Since there’s so much interest in my fitness adventures I’m going to start sharing some of the new exercises I try during 2014 in a Fitness Friday Spotlight series.

Up first is my new and current love – Yoga!

Prior to 2014 I had tried yoga 4-5 times and never really been a fan. I’m a typical ADHD kid who can’t sit still and never cared much for being told to breath – Hello, if I didn’t breath, I’d die!

But when I stubbornly gave it another try in January, something just clicked. The right class, the right instructor, the right mindset. It all just came together.

After months and months of a very intense work & freelance schedule, nonstop events, travel, and a great deal of stress – I think for the first time I really appreciated how valuable the practice was for getting me back to myself. Concentrating on my breathing stopped being an annoyance and started being a wonderful way to focus my energies and get out of my own head.

Now for the good parts – What I’m doing, where I’m going, what I’m wearing, and – Most importantly – What I’m eating!

Yoga Practice: I’m a Flow girl. I’ll take Vinyasa in a pinch, but prefer flow for now. Can’t wait to try Bikram!

Yoga Studio: I get my glow on at Glow Yoga SF in North Beach. Luckily they also offer spin & Pilates classes, AND have a spa. It’s my little sanctuary.

Yoga Fashion: My two favorite workout gear brands are Lorna Jane and Zella, everything it flattering & fits to perfection. My biggest pet peeves when it comes to gym clothes is bunching or overexposure, I love that these brands fit real bodies and I LOVE that the Zella tanks are long and actually cover my torso.

Yoga Fuel: I get stomach cramps if I eat directly before working out so I try to give myself at least an hour between eating and a trip to the gym. Usually something combining protein, healthy fats & carbs like Energy Bites or a Smoothie. After a sweaty yoga session I’ll either have a salad with a  fat-rich dressing or if I’m in the mood for something sweet – Which is ALL THE TIME lately – I’ll have protein pudding.
