Stretch It Out

An important, but unfortunately often overlooked, part of working out and running regularly, is to stretch it out. It doesn’t matter whether you stretch before a weight training session, or stretch after a run, or dedicate a full day to stretching and rolling.

Just do it!

Why is it so important?

  • It helps keep you limber
  • Flexibility improves your range of motion for a variety of activities
  • By increasing blood flow it can decrease recovery time post-workout
  • The movements can help to keep your joints healthy

Being an athlete growing up, stretching was always a part of a our daily routine – For gymnastics, volleyball, and diving. The stretches themselves may have shifted based on the needs of a given sport, but there were daily stretches rain or shine for all three. Usually before and after the training session.

Fitsporation

The concept of Fitsporation – #Fitspo – Has evolved in the era of social media.

I’m an exceptionally visual person and have long sought out visual representations of my goals and aspirations. Yes, I’m the person who created books of magazine clipping collages before the glorious Age of Pinterest. {And yes, I still have them}

I find inspiration images and quotes exceptionally motivational. I have folders on my phone and laptop for just those types of pictures. Plus, you know, all the Pinterest boards.

That being said, I think that there’s a line that’s very easy to cross this day in age. The one between inspiration and comparison. I think it’s especially prevalent on social media because you’re seeing a beautifully curated excerpt from someone’s “perfect” life.

You don’t see what it took to get there. Or what happened immediately before or after that picture was snapped. Or how that image fits into the grand scheme of that person’s day or even life.

For this very reason I’m a big fan of #Fitspo Instagrammers who keep it real. Totally real. From talking about bad days at the gym, bloating & soreness to missed workouts, rest days & real life priorities.
