Best of 2011

As I was doing my daily blog reading this morning I stumbled upon quite a few 2011 recap & “best of” type of posts. I found that they were really fun to read because it let me get the author’s opinion on things I may have missed over the course of the last year – which was especially fun when it came to the blogs that I only recently discovered.

So in that spirit I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorites from 2011:

Fashion

  • Best Red Carpet StyleZoe Saldana & Diane Kruger. Sorry, can’t narrow it down further, it goes against nature to pick between these two.
  • Favorite NewcomerAmber Heard & Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. They share a certain poise and both favor glamorous, ladylike gowns on the red carpet, which I love. (And I am not at all upset or jealous that Rosie is dating Jason Statham. I swear.)
  • Go-to Fashion Blog – I hate to narrow this down to a single site since I’ve discovered some really great ones this year, but I’d have to say that the most entertaining one I read is Tom & Lorenzo: Fabulous & Opinionated. I’ve had to outlaw it at work because I can’t stop laughing at their commentary.
  • Best Trend – Bright, minimalist Calvin Klein gowns
  • Favorite Collaboration – Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s Impulse

Fitness

  • Favorite Blog –  The Fitnessista is a great website with motivating posts & booty busting workouts, I’ve cited it a lot in my Gym Goddess series.
  • Favorite ApparatusMedicine balls! There are an endless number of great workouts that you can do to emphasize different muscle groups and you can even do them with limited space which is great if you don’t want an expensive gym membership or if you travel a lot.
  • Best New Workout You Tried – I’m going to have to go with CrossFit. My boyfriend is an instructor so with some not-so-gentle urging I gave CrossFit a try, and  I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised. If you haven’t taken an intro class I highly recommend it. It can be intimidating at first, but it’s challenging, intense and a great atmosphere if you’re competitive and like to push yourself.
  • Best Magazine – I adore Women’s Health. They have creative ideas for workouts, pick great, inspirational women to feature and I love the fun little facts & cute workout gear they include every month.

Food

  • Favorite Recipe – Vegan Mac n’ Cheese made from butternut squash & ANY of Evan’s desserts over at The Wannabe Chef. Seriously, check out his site, he has any type of recipe you could want – vegan, paleo, gluten-free…
  • Best New Ingredient – 2011 was the year of coconut milk! Not only is it high in phosphorus, potassium and iron, its delicious in everything from smoothies to veggies to curries. Yum. (Yes Sean, you were right)
  • New FindLollihop (which I promise you a full post on in the next week or so!)
  • Favorite BlogHungry Hungry Hippie & Oh She Glows
  • Best Books – I can’t pick just one! The Kind Diet, Peas & Thank You, I Am Grateful and Clean were some of the bests though.

What are you favorite new finds of 2011?

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for more new and exciting in 2012! 🙂

Looks of the Week

This past week had some beautiful holiday looks, chic outerwear and great daytime outfits that I just had to share. Enjoy the eye candy!

Miss Rosie shows us just how to dress for a casual day out and about. The extras here are the key, on top of slim jeans and a basic sweater she layered a beautiful rust colored cropped leather jacket, a leopard print scarf, slouchy boots and a to DIE for Celine bag.

This isn’t Rosie’s first time showing off a fun twist on a basic leather jacket, check out her gorgeous appearance at a Burberry show earlier this year here.

Basically, you’ve been asleep if you haven’t noticed that 2011 was the year of Rosie – The Frugal Fashionista has her best looks here and Tom & Lorenzo have brilliant and entertaining commentary on her red carpet looks here. Swoon!

Kate Middleton looked gorgeous in velvet Alexander McQueen and stunning diamond jewelry. Beautiful hair, beautiful makeup, just beautiful.

I love this vintage look from fashion blogger Late Afternoon. The pleated white dress, chunky gold jewelry and big Jackie O glasses are perfection.

I'm not always a huge fan of asymmetrical hemlines, but Poppy Delevigne proved here that she can pull just about anything off and this color looks phenomenal on her. The boots were what really caught my eye though, I'm loving rock n' roll touches right now.

I don't usually include editorials in my Looks of the Week posts but I absolutely fell in love with this shot of Kate Beckinsale for Harper's Bazaar Russia. She looks so adorably mod and Spring-y that I couldn't help but feature her. Great color scheme and styling for this shot, I especially adore the white sunnies.

Not only is Hanneli Mustaparta stunning, she puts together a great outfit. Rather than looking like a Halloween caricature in orange and black , she looks chic and stylish. Need those shoes and clutch STAT. Great example of how to pull of the day clutch look, carry another bag for the rest of yours stuff!

And if you’d like to see the opposite of Looks of the Week, head over to Tom & Lorenzo: Fabulous & Opinionated for the Top 15 WORST Celebrity Looks of 2011 – Part I, Part II & Part III.

Hope the rest of your week goes well!

Looks of the Week

Happy Monday my loves.

Is it just me, or are weekends getting shorter and shorter? Well, hopefully this can help soften the blow of yet another week starting…

This is such a great, clean look. Effortlessly striking. Arizona Muse has been all over the magazine pages and runways over the last year, and now she's starting to be just as dependable on the streets.

I didn't know that there was a way to make a puffy jacket look chic... Apparently you layer it with a blazer over a button down and tie. And for extra credit, add a hat!

Retro glamour at its finest. Evan has really been hitting her stride with these old school looks lately, somehow she manages to make them look fresh and modern rather than cookie cutter Bettie Page. Well done.

There is only one word for this look - striking. This dress is nothing short of show-stopping. If you saw her, could you help but stop and stare? It's not traditional or typical, but those don't seem to be high on her priority list for the red carpet. And her hair looks a million times better with the bangs swept to the side.

Whether you're sick to death of her or a big fan, you have to admit Miss Jenny From The Block looks pretty fierce here. You know me, I'm a sucker for a great coat. Add some leopard print, Jackie O sunglasses and badass shoes & I'm sold!

A chilly looking Rosie strutted her stuff in New York in some KILLER Alaia boots. While leather pants/leggings aren't something the average woman can pull off, this is a great example of how a statement coat and great shoes are all you need to make a look work. She could easily be wearing a dress under that coat or plain black pants, it's the extras that make it drool-worthy.

I love to feature fashion bloggers in my Looks of the Week posts and this is Justyna from Chameleonic's second appearance. What I love about this look is that it's simple and eclectic at the same time. Nothing is more timeless than a trench - but its spiced up by leopard heels and a bright fuchsia faux fur scarf.

Leave it to stylist Rachel Zoe to throw together the PERFECT black & white look. It's a little bit hippie with the flowy white maxi & tons of Chanel chains but the chic blazer & wide snake-skin belt keep the look structured and put together.

Not sure how to make snake-skin pants low key and daytime appropriate? California-based Song of Style has the answer – a jean jacket! (Told you they were back!

Mixing and matching high-low fashion is a trick many celebrities and fashion-insiders swear by – Olivia Palermo, Zoe Saldana and Kate Bosworth to name a few. And with stores like J Crew, Zara and French Connection creating well made, on trend clothes for a fraction of what designer duds cost, who can blame them for taking advantage? There are also an increasing number of amazing designer collaborations like Karl Lagerfeld for Macy’s impulse, Versace for H&F and Missoni for Target, where you can swoop up high-end designer created pieces for every day prices.

Kate Moss - Leopard Print coat

Looking for some fun new ways to wear traditional winter pieces? Faux fur has long been a winter staple, not only does it evoke old-school glamour, it keeps you toasty warm. Olivia Palermo‘s cropped jacket paired with a skirt and blouse is modern and chic while Kate Moss‘s longer jacket works equally well with Capri pants and a dress with tights.  On the other end of the spectrum is plaid, a low-key winter look that can be really versatile and laid back. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley makes plaid a little rock n’ roll with booties & a blazer and Alexa Chung channels the 60’s fashion with a plaid babydoll dress.
