Affirmations & Gratitude | A Beginner’s Guide

Writing down affirmations and keeping a gratitude diary are two of my secrets for maintaining a balanced, positive outlook on a daily basis.

Are these foolproof?

Stress happens. Bad moods happen. But these two practices help me start my day on the right foot, which can often improve my ability to tackle the hurdles that inevitably come up throughout the day.

An affirmation is a positive thought that’s written down and repeated. The goal is reinforcing your positivity through repetition. It may seem a little strange to write the same thing over and over, but you’ll discover that it can be very empowering.

Two key things that I like to keep in mind when I’m writing new affirmations are:

  • Use the present tense
  • Be positive!

Not sure what I mean? Rather than “I will start being more assertive” you would instead write “I am assertive. I will ask for what I deserve.” You’re not going to make a change in the future, the change has been made and you’re going to reinforce that mental switch through your affirmation.

Some people are great about laying in bed and going through a mental list of things that they’re grateful for each day. Or finding another time throughout the day to focus on this topic.

I for one, like to write it down. I set a calendar reminder for myself that goes off every morning and I pull out my gratitude journal and jot down what’s on my mind.

You can even combine these two practices and write down your daily affirmations and what you’re grateful for in the same place each day.

Are these practices that YOU think you could benefit from?

Thankful Thursday: Self Love

One of my August goals {Check out the 30 Day Challenge post for more!} is to be better about my gratitude diary. So I thought, why not dedicate a Thankful Thursday post, or two, to talking about that journey this month?

There are a few recurring themes that I see when I’m flipping through my gratitude journal – Self love and living in the moment being two of the most prominent.

With the first – Self Love – It can be a struggle every day to remind yourself just how amazing you are and everything that you have to offer the world.

I also feel like it’s so easy to get bogged down in what you don’t have or what you think you want – Kind of the “grass is always greener” mentality – So I like to remind myself to enjoy this moment. Right now.

You never get this moment again, so why not lose yourself in it?

  • I am grateful for my strong body – I mean let’s be real, this body has bounced back from so much over the years. Injuries, surgeries, chronic pain… But it always comes back. And it comes back stronger and better. I’m stronger and healthier at 33 than I was at 23 – And that’s definitely worth celebrating.
  • I am grateful for my resilience – I never stop pushing forward. Whether that means overcoming obstacles in daily life, staying positive at the office, or being consistent and ambitious in the gym.
  • I am grateful for my passion – Being able to enjoy the little things and not be totally focused on the future and what’s coming next has been a process, but I’m getting better at it every day!
  • I am grateful for my love of laughter – I love laughing. I love being able to make other people laugh {however unintentional sometimes…} I love cracking myself up. I mean, is there anything better than a great big belly laugh? Best way to burn calories in my book!

How do YOU celebrate Thankful Thursday? Think about self-love for a moment and leave me a comment below telling me what you LOVE about yourself!

30 Day Challenge

I’m kind of obsessed with Snapchat right now, and one of my favorites is Chinae from GetFitBrooklyn. She just started a very inspiring 30 day challenge of new, healthy habits. Her journey includes tackling the Whole 30, taking daily walks, and meditation, among other things.

So what am I going to try out for my personalized 30 day challenge in August?

I’m going to work on relaxing and on reducing my stress levels. I’m pretty self-motivated when it comes to working out and healthy eating, so what I want to challenge myself to do, is to slow down!

I’ve been lazy when it comes to my meditation and gratitude journaling lately, and down right deficient when it comes to including yoga in my daily life. So for August my goal is to:

  1. Meditate 1-2 times a day
  2. Write in my gratitude journal every morning
  3. Do yoga 2+ times a week

I’m not a great sleeper so meditation before bed is a great habit for me to get into. But unfortunately when I’m frazzled at night, I tend to forget. So this month will be able making it an important part of my wind-down routine. I’ll also try to squeeze in a morning meditation session, time permitting.

I have a calendar reminder on my computer to jot down an affirmation each morning, but if I’m busy when it goes off, I have a terrible habit of snoozing or dismissing it.

No more!

I’ll be sure to write in my gratitude journal each morning – I love starting the day with some positivity to get things off on the right foot.

I love yoga. Love it.

So why don’t I do it more often? Because I have a terrible habit of choosing sweaty workouts instead. But that needs to stop. Yoga is the perfect way to move on active rest days, especially since I’ve been stressing my body lately with heavy weights and long runs.

So I am challenging myself to make these changes for 30 days.

To make these small improvements to my life daily life, in the hopes that they will outlast the 30 day challenge.

Are YOU up for a 30 day challenge?

Thankful Thursday: Thanksgiving Edition

One of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions is going around the table listening as everyone says what it is that they’re most grateful for. So for this Thankful Thursday post I’m going to do a special Thanksgiving edition and share with you what I’m grateful for this year.

My family. This may sound cheesy, but it couldn’t be more true. My family is amazing and I love every minute I get to spend with them – I’m endlessly grateful for their love, support, and encouragement. And my favorite part of the holidays is getting to see them, spend time catching up, laughing, and planning out next adventures.

My home. I couldn’t love San Francisco more and I’m grateful that I have found such a wonderful place to live. Spending the Thanksgiving holiday in beautiful Napa County reminds me just how lucky I am to be a Northern California resident these days.

What are YOU thankful for this Thanksgiving?

Thankful Thursday: Spring Gratitude

With Spring in full force here in San Francisco I wanted to take a moment to stop and smell the roses with a Thankful Thursday feature. It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day and focus on just making it through the day, the week, the month, in one piece. But every once in a while I like to take a moment to appreciate all the amazing things that I have to be thankful for.
