2017 Fitness Adventures: Avant Barre | Discount Code

I’m always glad to have a healthy start to the year and I’ve really been enjoying trying out some new studios and workouts recently. After a relaxing and rejuvenating visit to the Love Story Yoga studio in the Mission at the beginning of the year, today I’m here to share my experience at Avant Barre here in the SOMA district of San Francisco.

The Low Down:

If you’ve never taken a barre class, the premise is that you use a ballet “barre” for an isometric strength training session. Which means that you focus on moving one muscle group at a time – Core, booty, arms, calves – Primarily focusing on bodyweight movements. Though some classes combine those movements with weights or balls.

Avant-Barre combines the traditional underlying barre techniques with fun music and beautiful dance-like moves for a full-body workout that really evokes a dance class.

No rhythm needed!

Thoughts:

I took the 45 minute Sculpt class and it was a great workout. You felt every muscle group being worked and were begging for mercy by the end of each set.

Especially the booty.

And the core.

The space is light and airy, right off of third street at Brannan in SOMA. They had a fully stocked changing room and plenty of lockers for storing your bag(s) during class. And the barre studio itself is bright with mirrors and windows – You feel like you’re in a ballet studio!

I really like mirrors during these types of workout since it offers you the ability to self-correct on form and notice when you start lagging towards the end of a set.

Recommendations:

If you love a super, super sweaty, gasping for air workout – Like Barry’s Bootcamp – Then you may not be drawn to this type of class. However, if you want a full body toning workout that allows you to safely push your boundaries, this is a great choice.

Bonus – It’s quite easy to customize if you have an injury or are new to the fitness game.

And I have to say that the low impact aspect also really appeals to me. With running, biking, and lifting as major parts of my weekly workout routine, I really need to add in a lower impact workout like this to help keep my joints healthy and happy.

When You Don’t Want To Go To The Gym

While I have a great deal of internal motivation – I’m a fitness addict, after all – We all have those days.

You know the ones I mean… When you’re busy or you’re tired or you’re stressed. And while you know that a trip to the gym or fitness class will actually make you feel better, the couch and the allure of GrubHub are just too tempting to ignore.

Those days happen to everyone, trust me.

So what do I do when I’d rather zone out than get in the zone?

I turn to something inspiring, of course.

I’m a very visual person and live for Pinterest, so when I’m having a particularly stubborn case of the “I don’t want to’s” I do a search or pull up one of my motivation boards. A few bad ass babes or inspirational quotes later, I’m usually ready to hit the gym!

Here are a few of my major sources of #Fitspo these days:

Fitness Goals: Consistency

Welcome back to the 2016 Fitness Goals series!

After my sharing my first goal for the year – Booty Booty Booty – I’m back to share my second long-term goal.

And believe me when I say, this is a LONG TERM goal.

The number one thing a nutritionist or trainer will tell you is important when you’ve developing a healthy lifestyle is: Consistency.

{Follow my fitness adventures on Intagram}

I’m a healthy person. I workout 5+ times a week, I eat well {most of the time}, and I put time & energy into creating a healthy, happy life for myself.

That being said, I definitely go off the rails from time to time. Which is, of course, fine, it’s just about making sure that your deviations aren’t too dramatic or too unhealthy.

Eating out. A decadent dessert. A glass of wine. All great treats. Binging on a whole pizza solo? Not ideal.

So my goal of consistency isn’t about weeding out all deviations, it’s about making consistently healthy choices, namely – Move Every Day.

Walking is a great way to meet this goal. I’m lucky to live in a city like San Francisco that’s small and pedestrian friendly – I can walk to work, the grocery store, the gym, dinner… And the added benefit is that scheduling a few extra minutes for a walk to a destination gives me some much-needed alone time to recharge and prepare.

How do YOU feel about your consistency health-wise? What’s your top fitness goal for 2016?

Social Fitness & Workout Dates

In recent years I’ve gotten out of the habit of regularly meeting friends for drinks or dinners. Yes, there are occasional exceptions, but in general I try to offer healthy alternatives that won’t derail my week.

While I love a great glass of red and will definitely help you finish off your fries, those evenings always get me off track. I’d rather eat well, exercise, and go to bed early.

Yes, I’m old.

But I also have to wake up early for work, I don’t want to miss out on my workouts, and I’ll feel better tomorrow if I don’t over indulge.

{My first Soul Cycle class with one of my best friends while she was visiting SF}

Enter the workout date. I love social fitness because you get the “going out” social aspect and the chance to catch-up with a friend or a group of friends, without the side effects of a night of drinking or eating unhealthy food.

No hangovers at Yoga!

My 2016 Fitness Adventures series with Jill – New post coming at you soon! – Has reminded me just how much fun it is to meet someone for a workout.

After our last 8am Barry’s Bootcamp class, where I finally got to try out the SOMA location, we wandered to the Ferry Building chatting and grabbed a green juice before parting ways. We got our sweat on, started the day on a healthy note, and still had time to talk about work, apartments, cooking, and boys. Oh, and most importantly, plan our next date.

{Catching my breath after Barry’s Bootcamp}

A few of my favorite social fitness excursions are:

  • Hiking
  • Walking to a healthy restaurant or juice bar {In SF I love walking from Telegraph Hill to the Marina for a tasty meal or snack Plant Café}
  • Rock Climbing {This is great for boy-girl workout date!}
  • Yoga // Pilates // Barry’s Bootcamp // TRX // Spin
  • Green Juice/Smoothies

On my To Do List? Indoor surfing and taking a cooking class!

Hello – I’m a Fitness Addict

While the word “addict” tends to have a fairly immediate negative connotation, I’d place “Fitness Addict” up there in the same category with “Green Smoothie Addict” & “Fabletics Addict.”

i.e. Mostly Harmless, but you might not want to get into a conversation with one of them because they’ll enthusiastically talk your ear off & try to convert you.

But I figure if you’re here, on a Fashion, Food, and FITNESS website, you’re probably similarly inclined, so I’ll carry on with my excited chatter.

So why would I consider myself an addict?

First, because exercise is mind altering for me!

If I’m stressed out or worried or angry, a workout is the fastest way to a good mood. It literally alters my mind!

If I’m tired or sore, a short run usually energizes and loosens me up. It really does, I swear!

If I want to socialize, I’d usually rather do it over yoga & green juice or a Blogger Fitness event, than drinks or unhealthy food.

{2016 Fitness Adventures: Barry’s Bootcamp Review}

And second, a subset of being a fitness addict that goes beyond the love of an actual workout, is that it means I’m also focused on healthy eating, hydration, recovery, and sleep. All important factors for helping to create a happy, healthy life.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, loving fitness and having a habit of choosing workouts over cocktails means that I’ve met some amazing, inspiring, motivational people here in San Francisco.

We may start our fledgling friendships over our love of Barry’s Bootcamp & Larabars, but the interests tend to go beyond that once you have that initial bonding moment. You might even be able to talk them into doing a year-long Fitness Adventures Blog series or into letting you interview them about All Things Fitness for your website.

Tell me my little gym bunnies – Why are YOU a fitness addict? What do you think of that phrase?
