2016 Fitness Adventures: Pilates ProWorks

Champagne For Everyday and MCLV were back at again and we’re thrilled to be here today to share the second post in our 2016 Fitness Adventures series.

Be sure to check out the Introduction to Champagne for Everyday and Barry’s Bootcamp posts if you missed them!

The next stop on our fitness train was Pilates ProWorks in the Financial District for a Pilates Reformer class.

The Low Down:

The ridiculously cute little studio is conveniently located in the Financial District which means it’s a central, easy-to-get-to location and walking distance from Embarcadero BART.

The space is lovely with convenient lockers and a fully stocked locker room with a shower so you can freshen up after class.

There are two large rooms for classes and a reception desk with goodies for sale when you first walk in. Just in case you forget your yoga socks!

We took Katie’s Pilates Pro class – A traditional reformer workout that combines weights, light cardiovascular work, resistance training, and stretching.

The class was very rejuvenating. It was a good workout that utilized the smaller muscle groups while simultaneously leaving you feeling limber and stretched out.

This is the perfect kind of workout for between punishing HIIT sessions or long runs – It strengthens and improved flexibility, while also promoting recovery.

I definitely recommend mixing in classes like this one to a full workout regime!

I’m also DYING to try out their MatBox class – It combines boxing, Pilates, and yoga. Can you imagine anything better? Those are all my favorites!!

Are YOU a fan of Pilates?

Does Champagne For Everyday sound familiar? She’s made a few appearances here on MCLV – From our meeting at the Vint App launch party in 2015 and being reunited at Organge Theory Walnut Creek, as well as co-hosting a wonderful event at Tiffany & Co. this Winter.

This is a perfect match up because not only is Jill a successful, busy, health & fitness-oriented woman living here in San Francisco, but CFE is a great website that combines healthy eating tips, recipes, fashion inspiration, and lifestyle content.

Bay Area Fitness: A Lady Goes West

One of my not-so-secret fitness blogger crushes is Ashley from A Lady Goes West.

Not only does she have a wildly motivational blog and killer social media channels, but she’s just about the sweetest, most inspirational person you’ll meet. Always smiling. Always upbeat. Always up to try something new.

And who better than someone who makes their living as a fitness coach & lifestyle badass to give us some {much-needed} tips on everything from workouts to diet?

MCLV: You’ve a Bay Area Fitness Blogger institution – How did you get involved in fitness? When did you decide to make healthy living the foundation of your career?

ALGW: It was a slow process, but a good one — because it set me on the right path! I began teaching group fitness as a side hobby while working in the corporate world at a PR agency several years ago when I was living in Florida. After moving to San Francisco, my interest in fitness started to grow, so I started to get certified to teach additional programs, and I studied to become a certified personal trainer as well. Once I had a plan in place, I ended up leaving my “day job” and jumped into fitness full-time, with writing and blogging also on tap.

MCLV: Can you tell us about the name of your blog and how you decided on it?

ALGW: Yes! I started my blog three years ago when I moved from Florida to California, which of course was my chance to “Go West.” I’ve always like to joke around that I’m a “lady,” so it fit as the perfect description.

MCLV: What’s your fitness training/background? Have you studied nutrition at all or have you learned by experience?

ALGW: Over the years, I’ve done a lot of training! I’m a certified personal trainer through NESTA, a certified LES Mills BODYPUMP, BODYATTACK and CXWORK group fitness instructor, a Kettlebell Athletics certified trainer, an Orangetheory Fitness Coach, a Pre and Post-Natal certified personal trainer, and I’m CPR/AED certified as well. While I didn’t study exercise science in school, I’ve done a lot of learning on the job as a trainer as well as through all of my certification workshops.

I have no formal training in nutrition either, but I certainly know what works for me and keep an eye on the industry research. I’d love to get formal training in nutrition one day, because as a personal trainer, you cannot legally give nutrition prescriptions to clients unless you have that additional backing and credential. Food and nutrition are HERE to stay as important parts of a healthy lifestyle, so I’d love to get into it more.

MCLV: I know you’re busy doing all sorts of fun & exciting activities during the week, and your days aren’t uniform, but could you give us an idea of what a typical day looks like for you?

ALGW: Yes! My days are never the same, but they have the same elements in different order. Typically, I wake up early to work on my blog, then I head to the studio to teach a class or two. I come home in the middle of the day to continue doing blog work, freelance writing projects and tons of preparation for the classes I teach. Then, I head back to the gym to teach more classes in the evening. At night, I like to eat dinner at home with my husband and watch TV, only to repeat the process again the next day.

I also fit in my own workout everyday for about an hour. Some of the classes that I teach require me to do the workout of the day (which serves as my sweat session), but some of them do not. Therefore, I work out at all different times of the day depending on my teaching schedule. I’m never in one place for long, so I have to be mobile!

MCLV: Your Instagram feed is filled with delicious looking food, and it’s clear that not only do you appreciate a good meal, but you’re also a fan of the occasional indulgence. If you could describe your diet or you approach to food – How would you?

ALGW: Ha! YES! I love to eat! And I love to look at pictures of good food. I would say that I eat very healthy Monday through Friday, and I indulge in a glass or two of wine and an extra dessert on the weekends, every single weekend. (Which is a must if you live in the Bay Area and like to dine out at all of the fabulous restaurant around here!)

I do not avoid any food groups, but try to keep my processed-food intake to a minimum. Although I’m not opposed to quality protein bars for snacking. I try to be as realistic as possible when it comes to eating, so that means my diet is far from perfect.

Perfect eating just isn’t life!

MCLV: What does a typical day look like for you food-wise?

ALGW: I have a pretty standard rotation of food! First meal of the day is an overnight oats mixture, made with Greek yogurt, almond milk, oats, chia seeds and flavorings, topped with a banana. I have that with green tea.

For lunch, I typically eat a baked sweet potato, eggs and avocado, all mixed together (if you haven’t tried this combo, you should!).

Before my workout, I’ll have some trail mix, a protein bar or another yogurt. After my workout, I have a plant-based protein shake.

And for dinner, I’ll have spaghetti squash and turkey meatballs, or chicken, brown rice and roasted veggies or any sort of lean meat and greens.

And for dessert on a healthy weeknight? Almond milk and coconut-covered dates! The perfect sweet ending!

Tell me – Who is YOUR fitness inspiration?

Fitness Friday: Revive Group Fitness

There’s an exciting new fitness app to hit the Bay Area called Revive {check them out on iTunes here}.

While I’m an Android user and can’t give the app a go, a reoccurring trend in my life, I was thrilled to be able to attend one of their recent group fitness classes.

Tone Up Tuesday at the Twitter HQ was a blast!

It’s a cool, modern space {where I’ve attended meet & greets AND fashion shows in the past} in the techie section of the Civic Center area in San Francisco, a few quick blocks from the Civic Center BART stop.

There was an enthusiastic group of men & women, two pumped-up trainers who never stopped smiling and kept everyone upbeat & enthusiastic, and a pretty killer group workout that included core, arm, and leg portions.

There were even some fun partner moves and team contests – Boys versus girls natch – That were a great way to meet other participants, make friends, and work different muscle groups than the solo moves.

I’m looking forward to giving another Tone Up Tuesday workout a go in 2016 – Especially a fun outdoor workout once the weather improves – Will I see you there?

Be sure to head over to their website and check them out – Revive!

Have YOU tried a group fitness class lately?

Workout Round-Up

It’s virtually impossible for me to force myself to do something that I don’t want to do. That statement can be applied to everything from attending events to dieting to working out.

Luckily for me, I love to work out. But that doesn’t mean that I always want to do what’s on the schedule. I’ve been walking to Pilates only to decide I need to go run stairs. So to the stairs I go!

Here are some of the workouts that are currently on repeat for me:

Running: While I rarely have time to run off into the Presidio and get lost these days, I’ve been making time for 3 milers a few times a week. From running stairs at Coit Tower to running intervals down the Embarcadero, it’s the perfect way to get outside and enjoy the gorgeous Fall weather.

Pilates: Since injuring my back in college I’ve tried a number of workouts and can, without a doubt, that Pilates is what changed my body and general back health the most. I’ve tried reformer at On Pointe and the killer Pilates class at Glow.

Yoga: For me yoga is less of a workout and more of a sanity saver. The more stressed I am, the more I need yoga in my life. That being said, it’s also amazingly rejuvenating when your body is sore from overdoing it at the gym. My go-to location is Glow Yoga on Washington Square Park.

Weights: During the week I do 2-3 weight training sessions, usually broken out into legs/booty and arms/back. One of the things that I love about these workouts are how infinite the combinations are and how versatile the moves can be.

Don’t have weights? Use bodyweight! Bored of squats? Try lunges & box jumps!

3 Minute Thighs // 7 Minute HIIT Workout: These two baby workouts from Tone It Up are perfect when you swear you’re too busy to workout. A short little sweat session that improves your mood and gives you just the boost you need!

6 Minute Sexy Arms: The quick and fun workouts from Blogilates are GREAT when you don’t have time for an hour at the gym. Most can be done at home (or in your hotel room) so they’re incredibly convenient.

Tara Stiles: These YouTube videos are a MUST whether I’m traveling or just don’t have time for a full class. Depending on how much time I have and what my goal is (stretching, relaxing, strengthening…) I just search her videos for the perfect one.

What’s YOUR current favorite workout?
