Skin Care Junkie | Natural Beauty & Hair Products

Welcome back my beauties! This Skin Care Junkie post includes natural, vegan, and/or eco-friendly hair care and beauty products that I think you might enjoy trying.

So, without further ado…

Juice Organics Shampoo & Conditioner:

Juice Organics is a subsidiary of California-based skin care giant Juice Beauty and features a range of hair products featuring organic aloe, coconut, jojoba and argan oils, and without parabens, silicones, or sulfates.

I was excited to try out their repairing shampoo and conditioner. If you’ve been following MCLV for any length of time, you’ll know that I LOVE playing with different hair colors. From redhead to platinum blonde, I’ve tried a number of different hues. I’ve been going au naturel for nearly a year now because my hair is so damaged. The blonde especially really took its toll. So I’ve been living on products like Juice Organics to try to refresh my locks. They don’t have a strong scent, but are thick and creamy. I love how my hair feels after I use them – It’s super soft!

Maple Holistics Vitamin C Serum:

A Vitamin C serum has been on my Must Try list for a while now. Why Vitamin C? It’s an antioxidant which means that it helps neutralize free radicals, the little bad guys that tear down your cells, and helps strengthen your skin. You eat blueberries and other sources of antioxidants to keep your body healthy, and you can topically apply antioxidants to achieve similar results for your skin.

This serum from Maple Holistics is made from Vitamin C, Aloe Leaf, Vitamin E, and Algae extract. I’ve been applying each morning before my moisturizer and sunscreen, and have noticed some evening out of my complexion. I’m quite pale so redness can be pretty visible, and I’ve liked how this serum has reduced that.

Algenist Genius Liquid Collagen:

Collagen is something that your body creates naturally, but the production decreases as you age, and the elasticity of your skin decreases. Consuming and topically applying collagen, similar to Vitamin C, is thought to be an effective way to help combat the aging process.

Algenist is a eco-minded Bay Area skin care company that I discovered a few years ago – I swear by their sunscreen – So I was tickled pink to see this new Genius Liquid Collagen product. It’s a vegan, plant-based collagen product that contains 13,000 beads of microalgae oil per bottle.

I like the smell and the texture, and it feels pretty wonderful on your skin, though it can be sticky for a few minutes while it absorbs. I’ve been putting it on before bed for a few weeks and loving it!

Volition Beauty Helix AM/PM Eye Gel:

Volition Beauty is a very cool new company that has the lofty goal of creating real products for real people. You can even submit ideas since it’s an online collaboration platform. And, bonus, their products are cruelty-free!

The AM/PM eye gel is a collagen-rich product that helps brighten and smooth the under eye area. I love eye creams and trying new products, and even I was impressed by the de-puffing accomplished by this little gel! This one is definitely going on my rotation.

A Fitness Girl’s Guide to Hair

While I love what working out does for my mind and my body, I don’t always love what it does to my hair. After a few years of daily, and sometimes twice daily workouts, I’ve found some tricks to help keep my hair healthy since perpetual sweat and ponytails aren’t always best.

So here’s my fitness girl’s guide to sweaty gym hair! 🙂

Oil: Keeping your ends well moisturized is the key for healthy looking hair. I prefer spray oils and have recently fallen in love with Maui Moisture Nourish & Moisture + Coconut Milk Weightless Oil Mist. It smells lovely, but not overwhelming, and each bottle lasts forever since you only need a single spray per use.

Hair Ties: I have torn out more strands of hair than I care to admit by using the wrong hair ties. I’ve tried brand after brand, but didn’t have the Goldilocks moment until I discovered France Luxe. I talked about them a few years ago when I first discovered the brand, and this is still the only brand of ponytail holders that I use. Their Grab & Go Ponies don’t pull out your hair, cause kinks, and last for years!

Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is a staple for every gym-lover that I know. Depending on the texture of your hair you may be like me, I can’t wash it daily or it becomes brittle and breakable. This Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk works wonders on my sweaty locks.

Masks: On days when I wash my hair, I like to put a mask on and sit in the sauna or a hot bath for a few minutes. My hair always feels softer and healthier after a good mask. A current favorite is the Phyto Phytoelixir Intense Nutrition Mask. I love getting little single packets as well for when I’m traveling!

Hair Transformation: Khaleesi Platinum

I have a short attention span and I love changing things up – From my apartment decor to my hair color.

This latest hair transformation was a dramatic one though, even for me. So we decided to document it in a Hair Survival Guide of sorts.

Here are the basic stats:

3 – Appointments with Natalie Keklikian {Read her tips on Salon Etiquette here}

1 – Overnight hair mask a week

2 – Maximum shampoos a week

3 – The number of Khaleesi references I’ve gotten so far

6 – Inches we cut off on our last appointment to leave me with the healthiest hair possible

Curious how I’m keeping my newly platinum locks healthy despite all the treatments? Moisture, moisture, moisture. Check out my favorite products below!

I legitimately couldn’t live without any of these. The hair masks are so hydrating and I always add argan oil when my hair is wet. I use the Kevin Murphy purple set every other week and the Pureology Precious Oil line the other times.

Hair Transformation: Redhead to Platinum Blond

A hair transformation is always a challenge, and undertaking a darker-to-lighter shift isn’t for a faint of heart.

After a few years as a redhead I recently made the decision to give a silvery platinum blond a try. Just, you know, to find out if blondes really do have more fun.

Three appointments and a lot of at-home hair treatments later I’m thrilled with the results. What I’ve learned from this experience is twofold.

First and foremost, anyone who wants to “go blond” should have to sign a release waiver. It’s a serious process and the upkeep is BANANAS, it would be pretty devastating if you didn’t know what you were getting yourself into. {Check out my Salon Etiquette post for other salon-related suggestions}

Second, keeping your hair healthy is your number one goal. I became the master of hair products over the past few months and have been using dry shampoo, oils, and masks like nobody’s business.

Read on to see some of the products that I’ve fallen head-over-heels in love with this Spring to keep my hair healthy and manageable:

On a daily basis L’Oreal’s EverSleek Precious Oil Treatment goes on the ends of my hair while Alterna’s Cleanse Extend Translucent Dry Shampoo in Bamboo Leaf Scent goes on my roots.

Whenever I need a little boost I turn to the Hair Chemist Coconut Oil Deep Repair Masque or the Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque.

And while I’ve been trying to wash my hair as little as possible, when I do I’ve been using Pureology’s Precious Oil Shamp’oil and Precious Oil Softening Conditioner.
