MCLV Mange: Protein Smoothie

I’ve been amping up my workout regime in recent months and one of the most important ways to stay healthy and promote recovery while you’re increasing physical activity is through nutrition.

Smoothies and protein puddings are a GREAT way to replenish your body, not only because liquids are easier for your body to digest than solids, but because you can throw in all sorts of great ingredients to get the most out of your meal.

Protein Smoothie Bowl Green Monster Recovery Smoothie Vegan Gluten-Free Paleo San Francisco Fashion Food Lifestyle Fitness Blogger

Ingredients:

  • 1 Frozen Banana {Sometimes I skip the fruit entirely and add sweet potato instead!}
  • 2-3 Cups Organic Spinach
  • Lemon Juice
  • Fresh Ginger
  • Maca
  • Acai
  • Bee Pollen
  • Wheatgrass

{Note: Whenever I get bananas I wait for them to ripen then peel, cut into fourths, and put in a Ziplock bag in the freezer. Instant ice cream or smoothies whenever a hankering hits!}

Directions:

  • Add ingredients to a blender or food processor
  • Add liquid of choice to achieve desired consistency {almond milk, coconut water – Whatever you’d like!}
  • Drink enthusiastically!

This is the recipe for my current favorite protein smoothie, but the beauty of smoothies is that you can add whatever you’re craving or whatever is in your fridge/freezer. At night when I’m in the mood for something sweet after a long day I’ll sprinkle shredded coconut, goji berries & chia seeds on top for an added boost.

Stay tuned for the next MCLV Mange installment and check out the previous posts from this series to see what you’ve missed so far:

September 2014 Round-Up

September 2014 was one for the books!

When I first started thinking about this post, so many ideas and events and fun antidotes came to mind that I didn’t quite know how to narrow it down. Champagne tastings, tattoos, London Fashion Week, shopping events, Giants games, photo shoots… All I can do it hope that October will be half as much fun!

September 2014 Round-Up

Fashion:

The big news for me from a sartorial standpoint during September was my trip to London Fashion Week for the CCUOCO SS15 Show – An amazing trip, an amazing city, and an amazing show!

I also partnered up with Isabel + Chloe for a giveaway, co-hosted a shopping party at the W Hotel with MDot Boutique, and attended some fun local events & fashion shows during Fashion Month.

Food:

Between travel and Q3 coming to a close at the office, it was a hectic month. Sometimes when I’m overwhelmed I’ll turn to convenience foods, but with two juice shops near my office I was in a position to make much better choices this month.

Curious about green juice and the great benefits of juicing? Check out my Project Juice Cleanse post.

Fitness:

I was excited to team up with Bethanimalprint for a fun fitness shoot in Mountain View this month. If you haven’t had a chance yet, check out my Fitness Friday: Anywhere Leg Workout and get moving!

New October 2014 Goals

Fashion:

Stay tuned for Halloween-apalooza here on MCLV. I love Halloween and was disappointed that my October/November move last year kept me from celebrating so I’ll be going all out this year. Decorations, desserts, costumes & more!

I’m also excited to share the new Fall/Winter 2014 outerwear collection from local designer A by Anubha – You may remember our daytime and nighttime outerwear shoots from last year. Can’t wait to show you the beautiful pieces!

Food:

October means one thing over here at MCLV Headquarters. And that one thing is pumpkin. I hoard cans of organic pumpkin year around to slip into recipes, but I try to hold off on the overtly pumpkin-based recipes until this time of year rolls around.

If you’re pumpkin-ly inclined as well, be sure to try these delicious recipes – Pumpkin Biscuits, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bars, and Cinnamon Blondies. They’re all vegan, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly!

Fitness:

I was excited to discover that the BodyFi studio across the street from my office has everything from personal training to TRX to Pilates. Stay tuned for a full review of the classes I’ve taken!

2014 Bucket List:

  1. Try a new class/physical activity – TRX baby! I’ve been wanting to give this resistance workout a try for a while and was thrilled with the results.
  2. Publish my writing – With all my travel time in September I went back and reread some of the first stories and books I wrote when I was in my late teens and early twenties. It was really interesting and fun to see how far my writing has come over the years.
  3. Travel – I was thrilled to take my first vacation in a few years and spent a glorious 8 days in London. Next up… Heading back to New York in October!
  4. Broaden my educational horizons – This month I rediscovered my love of mythology and spent hours lost in some new and old favorites like The Power of Myth and Mythology. I’m also getting ready for my 2015 trip to Greece with some language text books. Next step – Open them!
  5. Prioritize friendship – From collaborations with blogging friends to texting chains with college friends, I worked hard to keep up with everyone this month!

How was YOUR September?

Traveling

Before traveling there are a few things that I plan out in advance to ensure that the trip runs smoothly. My priority when I’m on the road is to make things as easy for myself as possible. Travel – Especially international travel – Is hard on your body, so I do my best to anticipate my needs and plan accordingly.

Packing:

My suitcase is usually filled with separates and dresses. The rule for separates is that nothing goes into my bag unless it can be worn twice. Black & white pieces are great because they’re versatile and can easily be mixed & matched to create flattering new looks.

A great way to give your looks an eye-catching touch is with accessories. Whenever I travel I pack jewelry, statement pieces, scarves, and belts to personalize each look. A cute striped tee can be paired with slim fitting cropped pants and a colorful statement necklace or with a flirty skater skirt & blazer combo.

Want more efficient packing tips? Check out my Wanderlust post!

Food:

My approach to diet while I’m traveling is threefold. First, I research restaurants near my hotel & the places I’m visiting. It’s good to know what’s available to you so that you can make healthful choices. Second, I’ll track down the grocery stores or corner shops nearby so that I can stock up on basics once I touch down. Finally, I pack some non-perishable snacks in my bag to ensure that I don’t end up miserable & starving. “Hangry” should be avoided at all costs!

Some of my go-to snacks for my purse or carry on are trail mix, nuts, garbanzo bean snacks, dried fruit, kale chips, Larabars, and pouches of protein powder.

I also pack ginger tea, my go-to cure for an upset stomach, and supplements in my toiletry kit. Supplements aren’t part of my day-to-day routine, but when you’re on the road you may miss out on some of your daily fruits & veggies and you’re more likely to get sick so supplements are a great way to keep your immune system in fighting shape.

Water:

I can’t stress this enough – Water is one of the most valuable things you can load up on when you’re traveling. From saving your skin to ensuring a good night’s sleep – The benefits of hydration can’t be overstated.

So either bring an empty water bottle through TSA screening and fill it up once you’re in the airport, or buy an eco-friendly bottle before your flight. And – Here’s the important part – Keep refilling it for your entire trip!!

Jetlag:

Hydration, resetting your body, and getting onto the local time are the three keys to surviving international travel. Here are my tips for your next trip:

  1. Drink tons of water before & on your flight
  2. Skip the caffeine, sugar & alcohol. Really!
  3. When you land get outside and do something active in the sunshine. The light will help your body reset its internal clock and getting moving can keep you from getting sore or stiff. Landing at night? Try squeezing in a walk, a run, a swim – Anything to get your body moving before you crash!
  4. If it’s daytime when you land your mission is to stay awake! Try to stay up until at least 7pm local time – This will help you wake up in the correct time zone the next day.
  5. Magnesium has been shown to aid in stress relief and help with sleep so I always pack a few Natural Calm Packets when I travel.

Fitness:

Walking is my favorite way to see a new city and I highly recommend bringing a comfortable pair of shoes on your next trip. Whether you’re wandering around the local landmarks, finding a restaurant, or just exploring, this is a great way to see the sights and stay active.

If I’m staying in a big city I’ll research gyms, check out what my hotel has to offer, or plan a running route in advance. If it’s a fun tropical vacation I’ll spend my trip swimming, snorkeling, diving, horseback riding, ATVing, and the like. And if you’re planning a relaxing-middle-of-no-where trip, hiking and bike riding are great ways to see the countryside.
