Tips to Stay Motivated at the Gym

Staying motivated at the gym isn’t easy. I love working out, but there are still plenty of days where the couch sounds waaay more appealing than sweaty sports bras, guys with no boundaries, and expending energy I don’t have.

But even when it sounds hard or I’m sore or tired or hungry, I can often times motivate myself to get to the gym. Here are my tips that you can try next time you’re not the mood.

Change Your Mentality:

Stop thinking of your workout as auxiliary and thinking of it like you do work – It’s non-negotiable. If you’re hoping to change your life for the better and start living a healthier life, then your workouts and your healthy food aren’t short-term or fad, they’re an important part of your daily life.

And that means you need to change how you think of them. Your workouts are like going to work – Unless you’re sick, you should go. BUT if you’re sore or recovering from an injury, you should definitely listen to your body and adjust accordingly. Killed it the day before on leg day and aren’t up for a Pilates class? Just walk on the treadmill for 20 minutes. Can’t make it to a class across town because you got stuck at the office? Do a little bodyweight workout at home!

Hold Yourself Accountable:

Find an accountability partner! If you do well with a community, join an online challenge like the ones hosted by Tone It Up or other online trainers.

What I’ve found works well for me is doing weekly, and sometimes daily, check-ins with my best friend. We text pictures, inspiration, and recipes to each other, motivating from a distance. Between social media and one-on-one check-ins there are lots of options to keep yourself inspired, so you can find which way works best for you.

Set Goals:

I’m definitely a Type A personality and I love me some goals. I like lists in general, and nothing thrills me quite like checking something off. Hi – I’m a nerd!

Need some other tips to get you started? Check out these posts on goals and rewarding yourself so you can find a way to make this work for you!

Find Your Inspiration:

I’m an extremely visual person so when I’m feeling tired or unmotivated – I head straight to Pinterest, Instagram, or Snapchat.

I create motivational boards on Pinterest that keep me inspired and remind me what I’m working for each day. Workout Motivation is my favorite!

And I follow some seriously kick ass ladies on Snap and Instagram – A few minutes of looking at killer photos or watching their stories is just the kick in the booty I need to get myself to the gym.

What’s YOUR tried and true way to stay motivated at the gym?

Monday Inspiration: Retro Style

Like History, fashion repeats itself.

Looking back at previous styles and trends and designs is a wonderful way to appreciate the past and to develop some creative new ways to reinterpret what the fashion industry has to offer. Looking at magazine editorials and advertisements from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s gives you great insight not only into those retro styles, but also into the more modern variations that we see on TV, in movies, and on the red carpet in our day-to-day lives.

The looks below – From the fifties, sixties, and seventies – Are great examples of styles and flourishes that still exist today. In a big way in some cases.

Take a look and see which of these micro trends are most visible in your personal style!

When You Don’t Want To Go To The Gym

While I have a great deal of internal motivation – I’m a fitness addict, after all – We all have those days.

You know the ones I mean… When you’re busy or you’re tired or you’re stressed. And while you know that a trip to the gym or fitness class will actually make you feel better, the couch and the allure of GrubHub are just too tempting to ignore.

Those days happen to everyone, trust me.

So what do I do when I’d rather zone out than get in the zone?

I turn to something inspiring, of course.

I’m a very visual person and live for Pinterest, so when I’m having a particularly stubborn case of the “I don’t want to’s” I do a search or pull up one of my motivation boards. A few bad ass babes or inspirational quotes later, I’m usually ready to hit the gym!

Here are a few of my major sources of #Fitspo these days:

{Misty Copeland is nothing short of a hero to me. I recently watched a documentary on her – A Ballerina’s Tale – And it had me twirling around my apartment practicing the ballet I never took.}

Fitsporation

The concept of Fitsporation – #Fitspo – Has evolved in the era of social media.

I’m an exceptionally visual person and have long sought out visual representations of my goals and aspirations. Yes, I’m the person who created books of magazine clipping collages before the glorious Age of Pinterest. {And yes, I still have them}

I find inspiration images and quotes exceptionally motivational. I have folders on my phone and laptop for just those types of pictures. Plus, you know, all the Pinterest boards.

{My Sweat Life}

That being said, I think that there’s a line that’s very easy to cross this day in age. The one between inspiration and comparison. I think it’s especially prevalent on social media because you’re seeing a beautifully curated excerpt from someone’s “perfect” life.

You don’t see what it took to get there. Or what happened immediately before or after that picture was snapped. Or how that image fits into the grand scheme of that person’s day or even life.

For this very reason I’m a big fan of #Fitspo Instagrammers who keep it real. Totally real. From talking about bad days at the gym, bloating & soreness to missed workouts, rest days & real life priorities.

It’s nice to have a real life glimpse into what’s going on so that you don’t feel like you’re not stacking up.

Life is rough, unexpected things happen all the time – The key to finding a happy, healthy balance is a great attitude and to keep giving it your best.

Now tell me what YOU think about Fitspo – Do you find it inspirational or is it actually detrimental to your progress?

Decoration Inspiration: Black & White

It’s hard to decide whether my decorations take a page from my closet’s book, or vice versa. It’s something of a chicken and egg conundrum to be fair. However, what you can easily tell, is that I’m a huge fan of  black & white.

With or – GASP – Without accent colors.

I’m currently finishing up a painting project – My very first time improving upon a rental in all my years in San Francisco – And once the last drop of blue-grey paint dries I will be enthusiastically replacing rugs, art, pillows, and textiles.

Here’s some of the fabulous images, from Pinterest mais bien sur, that are inspiring this latest decoration project at MCLV HQ.
