Drugstore Beauty Finds

I may be madly in love with my new Dior Forever Compact and live for visits to the Chanel counter at Barney’s, but my approach to beauty is similar to fashion – I love mixing high and low. That means that my make-up bag has a carefully tested selection of killer drugstore beauty finds that I swear by!

{CoverGirl Bombshell Volume Mascara // Maybelline Face Studio Master Glaze Glisten Blush Stick // Maybelline Baby Lips Crystal Lip Balm Crystal Kiss // Yes to Grapefruit Brightening Facial Towelettes}

Mascara is something that I can’t leave the house without. I’ve tried everything from YSL’s Mascara Volume Effect to Benefit’s BADGal {a regular in my rotation} – But I have to confess that one of my all-time favorite’s is CoverGirl Bombshell Volume Mascara. Not only have I been asked if I’m wearing false lashes, but I’ve had make-up artists ask what my lash secret is. You know your mascara is doing its job when professionals are noticing!

The Maybelline Face Studio Master Glaze Glisten Blush Stick is a must in my make-up bag or clutch for a night out because it’s a serious multi-tasker. Eye shadow, blush, lipstick, highlighter… There’s nothing this little stick can’t do. My go-to hue is Coral Sheen but there are some gorgeous shades out there to try!

Want a super soft lip balm with a hint of color? J’adore Maybelline Baby Lips Crystal Lip Balm Crystal Kiss. It’s the perfect choice when you want a little boost but lipstick or thick gloss is just too much.

Yes To is one of my favorite drugstore brands – Their products are clean and effective, just what I need. I especially love their grapefruit line and always travel with Yes to Grapefruit Brightening Facial Towelettes.

Beauty Guru: Kerstyn Inouye

Budding designer, make-up guru, and new-blogger-on-the-block at Dipped In Black, Kerstyn Inouye is here today to share a few of her favorite make-up and beauty tips, tricks, and must haves.

Kerstyn was my roommate during my Fall trip to London where she closed down the runway for CCUOCO’s London Fashion Week debut. I spent a week watching with wide eyes while she put together gorgeous beauty look after look. All the while using brushes that I never knew the purpose of!

MCLV: Between a gig at Sephora and social media snaps of you playing with new colors, styles, and types of make-up, it’s clear that you’re a beauty lover. When did you first fall in love with make-up?

K: Surprisingly I found my love for makeup after I got a job at Sephora. Being around all of the talented girls inspired me to experiment more myself.  Plus – I got to see all the new products come in and be the first to play with them! It made it hard not to fall in love.

MCLV: You like to mix things up on the make-up front and try new things, but do you have a standard beauty routine? From cleansing to make-up basics?

K: As much as I love to venture out, sticking to the basics is my favorite thing to do. I am obsessed with skin care, so I start by cleansing my face, then applying a serum, and following with a moisturizer. My favorite products right now are the Algenist Replenishing cleanser, Ole Henriksen Truth Serum (Day), Kate Somerville Dual Serum (Night), and Fresh Umbrian Clay Mattifying Moisturizer

For complexion, I apply a light weight foundation such as Buxom Show Some Skin Foundation, and then proceed with contouring. My favorite bronzer is the Two Faced Chocolate Solei  (and it really smells like chocolate!), blush I go with Marc Jacobs Shameless, and for a highlighter I just use a matte white eye shadow (since I am so pale!). For eyes I use a few nudes and brown shadows from the Smashbox Full Exposure Palette, then I apply a thin winged liner from Tarte (the fine tip is phenomenal!), and then apply They’re Real mascara from Benefit.

Of course, I can’t forget the brows; right now I use Anastasia Dip Brow. A must-have

MCLV: When it comes to make-up, what are your favorite brands? The ones that continually put out products that you love.

K: Some of my favorite brands are Make up For Ever, Benefit, Mac, and Tarte (the best all natural cosmetic brand!)

MCLV: What are the top tricks of the trade that you’ve learned over the years as a make-up lover?

K: Blend, Blend, Blend! It is so crucial to blend out eyeshadow, contouring, etc, so that you don’t have any harsh lines and it looks as natural as possible. Also, as tedious as it may be, always make sure to clean your brushes because all that makeup buildup is not good for the skin!

MCLV: What products do you always have in your purse for midday applications and touch-ups?

K: I wear lipstick every day of my life, so there is always one of not multiple lipstick colors in my bag. I also carry a fluffy kabuki brush paired with a mattifying setting powder from Laura Mercier to keep that shine away.

MCLV: What are the five skin care, beauty, or make-up products that you can’t live without?

K: I am obsessed with radiance so I always have one skin care product with Vitamin C, so that my skin is forever glowing.  I would die without my brows, BB Cream, mascara, and lipstick; my essentials for a minimalist day.

A huge thank you to Kerstyn for stopping by to share her tips & product recommendations. I’ve already ordered half of these babies!

Beauty Must Haves

After sharing the Winter skin care routine recently, I wanted to share some of the new products that I’m loving on the make-up side of the equation.

Beauty Must Haves Beauty Blogger Kat Von D Tattoo Liner Black Liquid Eyeliner

{I was recently introduced to the Kat Von D Tattoo liquid eyeliner pen and all I can say is that if you’re new to liquid eyeliner, this is essentially training wheels. You’ll love it!}

Beauty Must Haves Beauty Blogger Tarte Cosmetics Cheek Stain Tipsy Coral

{Bronzers can look a little – Well… Over-the-top this time of year. I prefer to give my skin a bit of color with a coral-based blush like Tarte Cosmetics’s Cheek Stain in Tipsy.}

Beauty Must Haves Beauty Blogger Hydra Life Pro-Youth Skin Tint SPF 20

{When your skin is a little under the weather – Too much alcohol, not enough sleep, too many holiday parties – It can be dry or prone to break-outs. So don’t make matters worse by layering on foundation. Let your skin breath with a tinted moisturizer like Christian Dior Hydra Life Pro-Youth Skin Tint or Tarte Amazonian Clay BB Tinted Moisturizer

Spring Beauty Essentials

Earlier this year I shared some fun ideas for mixing up your Beauty, Skin Care & Make-Up routines for Spring and today I’d like to share what I’m using on a regular basis. Some of these goodies are old standbys and some are new-to-me products that I’m loving so far.

You’ll notice an interesting mixture of brands, I’m slowly working my way toward using 100% eco-friendly, natural & green products but don’t want to be wasteful and throw away everything I’ve bought or been given so it’s a slow process.

Without further ado, here are my Spring Beauty Essentials…

Skin Care:

My skin care routine can be summed up in three words: Cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing. I like clean, soft skin and I gravitate towards products that have little or no scent and an immediate effect.

Spring Beauty Essentials Green Beauty Eco-Friendly Beauty Products

Night Cream – Origins Mineral-Enriched Renewal Cream: This makes your skin feel amazing, my only complaint is that I wish it had a pump!

SPF Moisurizer – First Aid Beauty 5-in-1 SPF 30 Face Cream: I’ve been using this for a few weeks and I like how light it is on my face. I’ve tried a few moisturizers in the past that immediately caused breakouts or visibly oily skin which this does not.

Eye Cream – Ole Henriksen Fresh Start Eye Cream: Bonus? Keep it in the fridge!

Exfoliator – Yu-Be Foaming Skin Polish: I’ve been using this for years and love how smooth my skin is after using it.

Mask – Origins Charcoal Mask, Boscia Luminizing Black Mask & Korres Brightening Sleeping Facial: Ok, I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a mask junkie. I’ll try any mask but these three are always in rotation.

Cleansing Wipes – Josie Maran: I started using these YEARS ago when they were given to me as a sample at Sephora and I’ve never looked back. They’re amazing for travel and I keep them in my styling kit!

Make-Up:

I prefer to keep my make-up routine simple and quick. Early mornings and long days mean that I need long-lasting, effective products that will keep me looking fresh from my first meeting all the way through my after-work events.

BB Cream –  Tarte Amazonian Clay: I’ve been mixing up what I put on my face in the mornings – Trying different products and new trends (BB, CC…) I’m currently using this Tarte one which I like, but my all time favorite is still the Dior Hydra Life Pro-Youth Skin Tinted Moisturizer. Seriously you guys, this is DIVINE.

Undereye Concealer – Laura Mercier: I’ve been using this duo for years and have never found anything that works as well!

Brow Pencil – Laura Mercier: Eyebrows are incredibly important, they really give your face shape & definition and I love how easy to use this pencil is. I’m dying to try Benefit’s Brows A Go though!

Mascara – Josie Maran Argan Mascara: I love this glossy mascara and usually go back-and-forth between Josie Maran and Benefit’s Bad Gal Mascara.

Eye Liner – Korres & I also love this liquid eyeliner from Stila If you’re new to liquid liner this Stila pen is basically training wheels – I highly recommend giving it a try!
