Skin Care Junkie | 5 Minute Makeup Routine

The beauty hack that I’m most proud of聽is that I’ve perfected my morning makeup routine so that it’s only 5 minutes long! I get up before 5am so a long, drawn-out routine isn’t in the cards. Hair gets pulled up into a bun and some basic, but effective, makeup is applied in a few hurried minutes.

Here are my favorite products, all of which I highly recommend and have been using for months or years. They’re all from Sephora as well, it’s my go-to for makeup and skin care {check out this post for more}. I love their website, plus there’s a store across the street from my office. 馃檪

First up, the most important product – Concealer. More specifically – Tarte Amazonia Clay Waterproof 12 Hour Concealer. I use shade light {yes, even in Summer} and it’s a really great consistency. The product is thick and good for coverage, but is well absorbed so that it doesn’t cause lines or fill in your wrinkles. I was a long-term user of the Laura Mercier Secret Concealer, but I’ve worked on swapping out my products for those without parabens. There’s no denying that it’s a really great product though, I recommend Laura Mercier as well. And how do I apply my concealer? Either with finger tips or with a baby beauty blender.

One of my favorite “new discoveries” from earlier this year {is it still new if it was five months ago?} is Tarte’s Hamptons Weekender Contour Palette. This is a gorgeous collection of colors – A highlighter, blush, and contour palette all in one. And the bonus is that they’re such pretty, versatile shades, that you can use them on your eyes as well! So this one $23 product takes care of my eyes and contouring my cheeks. Thumbs up!

While I use the Contour Palette on my eyes and my cheeks, I use different brushes – The Classic Double Ended – Shadow & Precision Brush and the Too Faced Kabuki Brush respectively.

My long time eyeliner love is Kat Von Dee Tattoo Liner. I’ve probably tried dozens of black liquid eyeliners and I always go back to Tattoo Liner in Satin Black. Simply put, it’s just the best out there.

My most recent mascara obsession is from Benefit, like my last few, and I’ve been using their Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara since December. Since I starting using Rodan + Fields Lash Boost my eyelashes have gotten really long and a bit unruly, this mascara helps keep them in order and looking their best. Paired with the聽Kevyn Aucoin Eyelash Curler of course!

My eyebrow pencil is another LONG TIME favorite. As I mentioned above, I have used and loved Laura Mercier for years, and her eyebrow pencil is another favorite. In the last ten years my hair has been everything from fire engine red to platinum blond – And throughout I have been loyal to the Laura Mercier Blonde Eyebrow Pencil. It’s neutral but effective, and universally flattering.

Powder – I don’t use pressed powder on a daily basis, but I do keep it around for blotting or touching up midday or after work before an event. My go-to is Tarte’s Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Tinted Pressed Finishing Powder. It’s lightweight, easy, and has no sulfates or parabens.

Now it’s confession time. Tell me the truth – How long is YOUR daily makeup routine?

My Daily Makeup Routine

I’ve been all about the skin care life lately, but thought it was about time to do a refresher on my current daily makeup routine.

I’ll preface this blog post by reinforcing that聽I聽greatly appreciate a quick morning routine. When I get up it’s early and it’s dark out, and I have a 25 minute walk ahead of me. Needless to say – I keep it quick.

That being said, my routine has changed a bit in the last year as I’ve been playing with new products and trying new tricks. So here’s the updated daily routine.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Concealer in Fair Light – Truthfully, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this when I first ordered it. I’d been using Laura Mercier for a while and didn’t give the Tarte concealer a fair shake until my trusty LM ran out. Fast forward – Now that I’ve just bought my second tube, I can confirm that it has beautiful coverage and great staying power throughout the day. I’m officially converted.

Laura Mercia Eye Brow聽Pencil in Blonde – I have used this brow pencil for years and it never fails. I always keep one in my bag!

Benefit聽Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel聽in Light聽– Benefit is known for their eyebrow products and this brow gel is a MUST. Super easy to use for a quick, high-impact look.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Tinted Pressed聽Powder Compact in Light – I don’t use face make-up which means I can get a little shiny by the end of the day, so I like to keep a compact on hand to powder off my forehead on occasion. 馃檪

Tarte Tarteist Double Take Liquid Eyeliner in Black- This is my latest adventure in liquid eyeliners. I always go back to Kat Von Dee’s Tattoo Liner, but I like to try other brands in between.

Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara in Extreme Black – Since I stopped getting my lashes tinted/curled, I’ve rediscovered my love of mascara. Really enjoying this Estee Lauder one,聽though my top two are Benefit’s BADgal and, of course, Maybelline Great Lash. Always and forever!

Benefit Watt’s Up Cream-to-Powder Highlighter – If you’re new to the art of highlighting products, like I am, this is a great product. Easy to use and subtle – No mistakes!

NARS Blush in Orgasm – The perfect shade of blush. Super flattering and works for most skin tones. Love this!

Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer – I’ve used this bronzer off and on for years and it’s still a killer product. The perfect way to add a little color or do some basic contouring.

Beauty Blender Micro Mini – I adore beauty blenders and keep a mini version in my daily makeup bag for under eye concealer.

Too Faced Kabuki Brush – This is the perfect retractable brush to carry with you for a quick blush, bronzer, or contouring update.

Kevyn Aucoin Eyelash Curler – This is a great basic eyelash curler that I picked up at Sephora.

What products do YOU love? How does your daily makeup routine compare to mine?

Beauty & Makeup 101: Sunless Tanner

This edition of the Beauty & Makeup 101 series is all about sunless tanner.

Let me preface this by saying that I have resisted the concept of a sunless tanner, or a tan of any kind, for many, many years. When pressed I’ve made Irish jokes, referenced gorgeous fair-skinned beauties like Nicole Kidman who make fair skin look amazing, and I’ve even trotted out a family history of skin cancer as an explanation for my pale, pale skin.

But the time has finally come!

As with the first post in this series, Beauty & Makeup 101, the impetus was the SF Symphony Gala. I love running outdoors and have spent the Summer running races and tackling lake-side trails.

The unexpected side effect? Sports bra tan line!!

So I popped over to my favorite salon – The Social Beauty Co. – For an organic,聽paraben-free聽California girl spray tan. And it got me curious.

After that I did what I always do – I turned to Sephora for answers. Thus securing yet another year of VIB Rouge status.

I have a problem kids.

After reading product reviews and checking ingredients, I decided to try out two different products to help me with my tanning aspirations. Both by Tarte, which is a favorite brand of mine.

I also got a chance to try out two drug store versions – the Neutrogena Build a Tan Gradual Sunless Tanning and聽Bondi Sands Wash Off Instant Tan. Both worked out pretty well, though Tarte is my favorite so far!

Do YOU have any tanner tips? What’s your favorite tanning product or brand?

Beauty & Makeup 101

When I decide to tackle a new project, I tend to get really excited. Like… Really, really excited. I loved running the San Francisco Half Marathon so much that while still high on endorphins, I signed up for the Golden Gate Half Marathon in November. And bought a running watch. And new shoes.

See what I mean?

I’m all in.

So after binge watching videos on Lydia Elise Millen’s YouTube Channel, I decided that I’ve neglected my girlie side by never learning how to really聽do my own makeup.

I mean, I know how to do my makeup. I get dressed every day thank you very much. I can do a cat eye. I mastered liquid liner. I even have a makeup tray at home filled with things that I’ve bought over the years. Most of which I don’t use or even know what to do with.

But when my YouTube binge happened to correspond with trying, and failing,聽to book a makeup appointment to get me ready for a Gala, I realized it was time. I would do my own makeup for the event. For the first time in the six years I’d been going!

So I’m going to start a new Beauty & Makeup 101 series this year where I share my adventures with new types of makeup – Contouring kits, what! – And products, and actually share some of the looks that I manage to put together.

I will never be a foundation-every-day kinda of girl, but I do love the idea of not having to shell out for a makeup artist every single time I have an event or a photo shoot on the schedule.

Tell me – What beauty or makeup subject would YOU like me to tackle? Any suggestions or requests?

Post-Workout Beauty Hacks

As someone who very regularly leaves the office midday for a workout or a run, I thought I’d share some of the post-gym beauty hacks I’ve learned over the years.

While I’ve definitely returned to my desk with a bright red glowing face after a grueling run, for the most part adequate preparation and a few minutes of pampering is enough to get you back at work looking fabulous.

Whether you have a locker, a gym bag, or just a giant handbag, having the right products on hand is important. So save those Sephora & Nordstrom samples, they’re the perfect size!

I always take a COLD shower after a workout. Especially after a run since I’m prone to ending up with a red face. The cold water not only feels amazing, but helps cool off your body and reduce redness.

Skin Care & Makeup:

I hate hate hate piling on makeup after a sweat session. Not only does my skin feel radiant afterwards, but the products also just slide right off.

So I keep Josie Maran Bare Naked Argan Wipes at the ready to clean up any messes, my Laura Mercier聽 Secret Camouflage compact for touching up under the eyes {my problem area for sure}, super moisturizing lip balm, and last but not least聽deodorant.

I also have sunscreen in my bag for when I do midday runs. I apply Algenist Anti-Aging Moisturizer with SPF 20 around 5am each morning, but reapply with Algenist Ultra Lightweight SPF 50 before a 12pm run.

My two hair tricks are (1) Make sure you have hair ties & sporty headbands on hand for during and after a workout, and (2) DRY SHAMPOO.

Note: You want hair ties that don’t kink your mane, I’m a huge fan of France Luxe’s line of non-damaging L. Erikson Grab & Go Ponies. You can find them in my bathroom, my desk, my purse, and my gym locker!

Seriously, if you workout as often as I do, you know that the struggle is real to follow your stylist’s “don’t wash your hair everyday” commandment. Enter dry shampoo. My favorites are Kevin Murphy, L’Oreal, and Macadamia Dry Shampoo.

What’s YOUR favorite post-gym beauty hack?
