When You Don’t Want To Go To The Gym

While I have a great deal of internal motivation – I’m a fitness addict, after all – We all have those days.

You know the ones I mean… When you’re busy or you’re tired or you’re stressed. And while you know that a trip to the gym or fitness class will actually make you feel better, the couch and the allure of GrubHub are just too tempting to ignore.

Those days happen to everyone, trust me.

So what do I do when I’d rather zone out than get in the zone?

I turn to something inspiring, of course.

I’m a very visual person and live for Pinterest, so when I’m having a particularly stubborn case of the “I don’t want to’s” I do a search or pull up one of my motivation boards. A few bad ass babes or inspirational quotes later, I’m usually ready to hit the gym!

Here are a few of my major sources of #Fitspo these days:

Monday Motivation

Mondays… Are rough…

I’m always torn because I adore fresh starts. A new month. A new year. A clean slate to meet all your goals head-on. But sometimes it’s hard to see the fresh start through the Monday…

So today I’m here to give us all a little bit of hope and a little bit of motivation to help us all survive this Monday as we head into Fall.

My top suggestions for getting your Monday off on the best foot are to:

  • Be positive – Attitude is EVERYTHING
  • Find time to enjoy something you’re passionate – That can mean anything from taking a class or meeting a friend you love to walking home & stopping to enjoy the sunset
  • Be grateful – I write in a gratitude journal every morning and it’s a great way to start the day!

What’s YOUR top Monday survival tip?

Working Out & Listening To Your Body

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned since I started getting interested in health and fitness a few years ago is the art of listening to your body.

It’s so easy to let your moods or your schedule dictate your workouts. Or lack there of. There are so many factors on a daily basis it’s a wonder any of us every make it to the gym at all – Not enough sleep, too busy, it’s raining, ate too much, don’t feel like it…

While I love sitting down for Sunday Prep each week – Food preparation, meal planning, workout scheduling – I have learned to stop placing pressure and guilt on myself for changing things up.

A perfect week would have a combination of yoga, pilates, weight training, running, and biking. But some weeks all I want to do is run. Other weeks I’m too busy during the day and can only make it to yoga once or twice after work. But rather than letting that guilt ruin my day or my perspective, I’ve learned to roll with the punches.

Take Stock:

Ask yourself – Why do you want to skip your workout? If you’re tired or sore, try something less strenuous like a walk during your lunch break. If you had your heart set on a run but it’s pouring out, try the stationary bike. Are you completely not in the mood for a traditional work out? Try zumba or another new class to mix things up and keep yourself engaged.

Remind Yourself:

Take a second to remind yourself why you’re doing this. Are you trying to fit into a bridesmaid dress? Get ready for vacation? Prepare for a race? If you’re not interested in working out, what else could help you prepare? Going for a walk, scheduling a class later that week, meeting a friend for a hike instead of cocktails later in the week…

That last one is a BIG thing for me these days. Instead of meeting friends for drinks or dinner I’ll suggest a walk or rock climbing or invite them over for a healthy meal. Then I get to see my fabulous friend without worrying about getting off track.

Let It Go:

Whatever you decide to do, accept that decision and move on. This is by far the hardest part for me. Whenever I skip yoga or miss a workout a deep sense of guilt overcomes me. It’s like I’m letting myself down.

One of my resolutions for 2015 has been to stop placing blame and guilt on myself and this is one of the areas I’ve been working on. For me the key is to mentally walk myself through the steps: (1) Yes, I’m deviating from my schedule. (2) No, it’s not the end of the world. And (3) I can try again tomorrow.

Healthy Body Inspiration

Making a plan is great. Creating a To Do List or an organized chart listing everything you’ll accomplish is very helpful. But neither of those will actually get you through a workout. You need to find that inspiration to keep pushing to achieve a healthy body within yourself.

And how do you do that…?

[1] Set aside time. Whether it’s buying a class pass, joining your local gym, meeting a friend for an after-work run, or putting a calendar reminder in Outlook to go for a walk on your lunch break.

[2.] Set a goal. Run a race. Master a pull-up. Go to yoga twice a week. No matter how big or small, those goals can help keep you on track.

What to do when you reach one? Set another!

[3.] Stay inspired. Remind yourself why you’re doing this. When your alarm goes off at 5am its easier to snooze that baby than get out of your cozy bed, and you will, unless you know why you’re pushing yourself. Want to fit into your wedding dress? Getting bathing suit ready for a Summer trip? Want to feel your very best?

Remind yourself!!

[4.] Remember – It’s not just about working out. I’m a total gym junkie. I’ll make time for a workout regardless of what’s going on. What am I terrible at? Portion sizes. Saying no to seconds. Not cleaning my plate. And truthfully, your diet has the potential to impact your hard-earned results more than your gym time.

So what’s a girl to do? Keep an eye on your diet, eat clean, make sure you get enough water, and sleep, sleep, sleep!

[5.] Rest & Recover. Taking days off from the gym, indulging in that much-deserved slice of gooey chocolate cake, and sleeping in are all important to staying on track. Your body needs healthy whole foods to help it rebuild your muscles, it also needs sleep and downtime. And to keep you from falling off the health train you need to make sure to give yourself some healthy indulgences so you don’t feel deprived. Try some of my vegan, gluten-free, paleo-friendly desserts: Energy Bites, Banana Bread Macaroons, Raw Chocolate Torte & Coconut Cashew Cookies.
