Work Etiquette

There are a few different ways to approach behavior and the establishment of an office persona in the modern working world so read on for some of my top tips and suggestions for work etiquette to get you started.

[1.] “Casual dress promotes a casual attitude.”

This is, without a doubt, my go-to slogan at the office. Obviously fashion is something that I take seriously – Hello, fashion blogger here – But the office is one place where everyone should take fashion seriously. Or, at the very least, think about their style choices. I’m not saying that you need to channel The Devil Wears Prada on a daily basis, but you need to think about what you’re wearing and what those choices say about you, your goals, and your work ethic.

[2.] Attitude is EVERYTHING

How you interact with your colleagues – From your administrative assistant to the coffee cart operator to your boss – Can impact your career in very real ways.

Be polite. Be courteous. Be gracious. And by all means, think before you speak. If you’re frustrated and swiftly reaching the point of no return, try getting out of the office for a quick walk, calling someone to hash things out, or putting in headphones and losing yourself in music that you love. Just don’t take it out on the people around you!

[3.] Police your personal space

Even though your desk, your office, is by definition yours, you need to consider it a public space. Keep it clean, keep it organized. We all know those people who seem to thrive in the chaos of disarray, but at the office you need to consider the people around you and what your space says about you.

Do you really want your boss stopping by to chat and noticing crumbled papers on the floor, old dishes on your desk, and dusty stacks of papers taking up your work space? Of course not. So do your best to stay on top of your piles!

How To Stay Healthy At Work

Whether you’re running around after kids, stuck at a desk, or in and out of meetings all day, a hectic weekday schedule can wreak havoc on your healthy living goals. We get caught up and forget to eat. Or move. Or take any time for ourselves.

Here are some of the tips that have helped me make healthier choices on a daily basis.

[1.] Plan ahead

Having healthy snacks and meals ready and available will improve your chances of staying on track during the day. If you wait until you’re starving, you’re going to eat whatever you can find. Keeping trail mix, raw nuts, dried fruit {with no added sugar}, and energy bites in your desk, car, or handbag are great choices.

You can also bring in lunch to ensure healthy options – Whether it’s a giant salad, leftover Indian food, or even a healthy, nutrient-packed dessert.

[2.] Stand Up

If you can swing it, a stand-up desk is a game changer.

Not only does it reduce pressure on your discs to lessen back pain, but it also helps strengthen muscles throughout your body and improves posture.

I’ve also found that it keeps me more alert throughout the work day.

[3.] Drink Up

The benefits of getting enough water throughout the day are never-ending – From helping your body maintain beneficial pH levels to improving your complexion to keeping you from snacking. Do you have trouble gulping down enough of the good stuff during the day? Try adding sliced fruit to your glass or bottle for an eye-catching reminder.

Do you drink juice or soda? Liquid calories can undo all your good work at the gym in no time, so try to limit yourself.

[4.] Move

Whether it’s going to the gym on your lunch break, biking to work, or talking a midday walk around the block, make an effort to move throughout the day. Don’t let your day begin and end at your desk.

I like to walk to and from my office, and I try to go to the gym every day at noon. I’ve found that if I set aside a block of time in my Outlook calendar for workout out, I’m pretty good about honoring that “me” time.

[5.] Open Your Eyes

One of the unexpected side effects of being in an office building, surrounded by artificial lighting, is that it confuses our bodies. We have internal clocks that reset when they see sunlight – i.e. In the morning your body knows that its morning because it senses the sun. Try to go outside at some point during the day, even for a quick walk or to eat your lunch on a sunny bench, and you’ll be surprised how it changes your energy levels and sleep patterns.

Tiffany & Co: Office Style

If you’re following Moi Contre La Vie on Instagram you got a sneak peek of this fun new collaboration, but for the rest of you, I’m thrilled to share a new project with the one and only Tiffany & Co!

Curious about my background with Tiffany? You can read about my family Tiffany traditions here and here.

I was thrilled to stop by the Union Square Tiffany & Co last week to shoot the gorgeous new Tiffany T collection.

This new collection, created by design director Francesca Amfitheatrof, is the embodiment of all things Tiffany – Enduring style with a modern twist.

Something that I’ve noticed about older design houses is that they can get trapped in the past, recreating styles that exemplify the brand’s history, but without innovation. Tiffany & Co. has done a wonderful job over the years of staying true to the company’s rich history while still looking to the future, creating pieces that can be seamlessly integrated with modern styles.

The first look that we put together featuring these great pieces was a modern office style. My go-to for spicing up a boldly colored tunic and cropped blazer combo is eye-catching jewelry.

Here I’m wearing a fun mix of gold, silver, and rose gold, as well as combining delicate and more dramatic pieces.

Some of my favorites from this shoot were the beautiful, stackable Tiffany T Wire Rings and the gorgeous, goes-with-everything gold & white Tiffany T Cutout Cuff.

My latest obsession? The Tiffany T Chain Necklace – Not only can you fasten together chains of different metals to extend the length of the necklace, but you can also wear it as a wrap bracelet or belt! Talk about versatile investment piece!

What’s YOUR office jewelry style?

Be sure to stay tuned for MCLV’s next Tiffany T look as we get ready for the perfect Valentine’s day!

Work Style With Lan Jaenicke

I recently shared two of my favorite boldly colored Lan Jaenicke jackets with you – Aubergine & Chartreuse – So today I thought we’d chat about the separates living underneath those fabulous coats.

If you work in an office with a business or business casual dress code like I do – You end up living in separates. My closet is filled with simple pieces that can be quickly and effortlessly thrown together. You want pieces that are chic and flattering, and that go with everything in your closet to save you precious minutes in the morning.

This pencil skirt fit like a dream – And honestly, there are few things greater than a killer pencil skirt – But it was the chic little sweater that I really fell in love with. The red stripe up the back is perfection. It retains its classic esthetic and goes with everything, but the splash of crimson gives it a little something extra. Not to mention the vertical line is incredibly flattering!

Pair these basics with nude heels and a simple tote and you’re ready for the office – Just add outerwear!

MCLV Style: Prim & Proper

Working in the corporate world means that my office style tends towards classic and traditional – I keep my arms covered and wear knee-length skirts or dresses 4 – 5 days a week. But just because my style is fairly formal doesn’t mean I can’t have fun with work fashion!

{You can shop similar pieces by clicking these hyperlinks: Embellished Empire-Waist Dress – Donna Ricco from Nordstrom, T-Strap Heels – Zara, Top-Handle Handbag – Zara, Black Leather Bow HeadbandBanana Republic, Geometric Gold Bracelet – BCBG, Gold Wrap Ring – JewelMint & Black Bow Ring – Forever 21}

What drew me to this was the embellished empire waist, it gave the retro-silhouetted dress a little something extra. And because the waist is already so dramatic I usually skip the necklaces with this dress and just pile on bracelets and rings. Or in this case, a black faux leather bow headband – J’adore! <3

What’s the dress code in your office? Do you usually dress formally, informally, or business casual like me? Do you have a work “uniform” that you usually wear?
