Pampering Yourself & Self Care

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it’s necessary.

One of my favorite sayings is: “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” And it’s true. We get so busy trying to conquer our hectic lives that we’re just going through the motions, we don’t stop to think about how we’re feeling, what we need, or how to better ourselves. I’m a huge fan of journaling, sometimes that’s how I actually figure out what I’m feeling. I start my day with a gratitude journal and affirmations, a trick that my mom taught me in college, and it helps me set intentions for the day. It’s also a daily reminder that my needs matter and shouldn’t just be an afterthought.

Another way that I like to promote self-care, is through a bit of pampering. For me, a bath is where it’s at, but I know that’s not for everyone. Here’s a list of ways that you can give yourself a little love and help renew your mind, outlook, and body.

  • Spa day – Get a facial or a body treatment. Relax, enjoy, and renew.
  • Skin Care – For me skin care is essential, but it’s also a way that I like to pamper myself. I go through a relaxing, rejuvenating routine that smells and feels great. It’s a way to give myself a little love every day.
  • Massage – I live for massages and highly recommend enjoying one for relaxation or for therapy when you’re in a heavy training or racing mode. They are a lifesaver!
  • Shopping – Finding great new activewear is always a favorite pastime of mine {Nordstrom is carrying Sweaty Betty now!} and I never shy away from some quality Real Real browsing time.
  • Workout – Working out is a stress reliever. Even if you’re feeling stressed or tired, it can energize you. Go for a run, head into a class, or go work out your stress on a boxing bag.
  • Bath – Give me Epsom salts, a bath bomb, or bath oils, and light a candle, and I am happy for hours!
  • Sauna/Hot Tub – No distractions, just focus on your breathing and expel those toxins.

Reminder – Taking the time to do any, or all, of these things doesn’t make you a bad mother, or a bad wife, or bad employee, or a bad anything. Sometimes you need to prioritize yourself so that you’re a more understanding, calmer, happier human for the people around you.

Beauty Pampering

I love a night in for a little beauty pampering – Giving my hair, skin, and even nails some much-deserved TLC.

I’m actually not sure if my love of pampering rituals came from my long-term obsession with masks, or if the masks came first. As with the chicken and egg, we may never know…

Here are a few of my all time favorites, which are just part of the reason I’m on my second year running of Sephora VIB Rouge status…

Murad Eye Lift Treatment – I read about this one in a magazine and immediately went onto the Sephora website to buy it. Wasn’t disappointed.

Once I’ve cleansed I’ll dap on a rich eye cream for the night. I’m currently on a bit of an Origins eye kick – Going back and forth between Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging Eye Treatment and the Origins GinZing Refreshing Eye Cream. The latter is my go-to when I’m traveling to help save the delicate skin under my eyes!

First I do a deep exfoliation with either the Korres Wild Rose Daily Brightening & Refinishing Buff Cleanser {my trip to Greece last year re-ignited my love affaire with Korres!} or Ole Henriksen Walnut Complexion Scrub.

So good.

Then I apply a super lux face mask. Which is my favorite part of my beauty pampering evenings!! A few of my current favorites are:

Afterwards I lather on an intensive moisture like Josie Maran Pure Argan Intensive Hydrating Treatment. Or sometimes I’ll wear an overnight mask like Peter Thomas Roth Vitamin C Brightening Sleeping Mask. I just put a hand towel over my pillow to avoid getting product on it!

Since I’m only washing my hair 1-2x a week these days – Because my hair stylist is the boss of me – I like to do a deep conditioning mask on cleaning day. I love the Argan Oil of Morocco Intense Moisturizing Treatment. A bonus of that one is that you can find it at your local drug store or Target!

Once my hair is clean, I apply an oil-based product to the roots. I adore the Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque.

Bathes are a key part of my nighttime ritual and I love to make them extra relaxing and rejuvenating with oils or salts. If I’m extremely sore & in need of some help with recovery, I’ll add Epsom salts. And if I had a stressful day or am having trouble sleeping that week, I’ll add peppermint essential oils. Bonus points if you add a candle to bath time for pampering night!

I’m a bit of a coconut fanatic and after my nightly bath I smother myself with Trader Joe’s Coconut Body Butter which is a magical, wonderful thing that I highly recommend.
