Fitness with Ricky Rebel

Today I’m thrilled to invite Los Angeles-based glam rocker Ricky Godinez of Ricky Rebel back to MCLV! After his fabulous interview on beauty & skin care last year, I begged him to come back to share some of his healthy living tips & fitness recommendations.

As a Pilates instructor, dancer, and serious go-getter, I loved hearing what he suggested to help get that fit, chiseled look that we get to see on his Instagram page.

First up – Fitness!

Your mirror selfies on Instagram reveal some seriously enviable abs – In addition to Pilates, which you teach, and the dance practice that you have to do for your shows, what other workouts are you doing?

I hit the gym every now and then. I lift weights and do 20 min of cardio. I tend not to overdo the cardio because if I do, I start to lose muscle. It’s all a balancing act. I try to have a consistent workout regimen though.

What does a typical week of fitness look like?

Monday I take a Pilates class before I instruct 3 of my own Pilates classes. I fortunately do not have to perform every single move in my classes or I would be exhausted. Tuesday I take a day off. Wednesday I take a morning Pilates class or a Bar Method class (If I feel like lifting my booty) and instruct 3 classes afterward. Thursday I take the day off. Friday I instruct 2 Pilates classes and then take a morning Pilates class. Saturday I take the day off. Sunday I hit the gym doing cardio, weight training, minimal legs, & a quick efficient ab routine.

And recommendations for people who are looking to step up their fitness regimes or who have a hit a plateau in the gym?

I recommend Pilates. Pilates is something that every athlete should do. It helps strengthen and align your musculature giving you that extra edge that will help you become a stronger more high performance athlete.

Have YOU tried Pilates? What did you think?

Stay tuned for Part II of this interview to hear about Ricky’s diet and daily approach to nutrition.

A Week of Workouts

I get lots of questions about my workout regime and, especially, how I stay active with such a packed schedule.

Tip #1 is to prioritize yourself. It seems impossible when you’re being pulled in a million directions, have an endless To Do List, and a calendar that leaves no time for anything new.

But the sad truth is that none of that is going to change. However, just think about how much better you’ll be able to meet those challenges if you’re at your healthiest!

To help give you guys a peek into my day-to-day routine and approach to healthy living & working out, I decided to keep track of my workouts for the last week in February as I finished up the Tone It Up 8 Week 2016 Challenge and started training for the Presidio 10 Miler. This will give you an idea of how I squeeze things in when I’m utterly slammed during the week.

The Low Down:

The ridiculously cute little studio is conveniently located in the Financial District which means it’s a central, easy-to-get-to location and walking distance from Embarcadero BART.

The space is lovely with convenient lockers and a fully stocked locker room with a shower so you can freshen up after class.

There are two large rooms for classes and a reception desk with goodies for sale when you first walk in. Just in case you forget your yoga socks!

Thoughts:

We took Katie’s Pilates Pro class – A traditional reformer workout that combines weights, light cardiovascular work, resistance training, and stretching.

The class was very rejuvenating. It was a good workout that utilized the smaller muscle groups while simultaneously leaving you feeling limber and stretched out.

Recommendations:

This is the perfect kind of workout for between punishing HIIT sessions or long runs – It strengthens and improved flexibility, while also promoting recovery.

I definitely recommend mixing in classes like this one to a full workout regime!

I’m also DYING to try out their MatBox class – It combines boxing, Pilates, and yoga. Can you imagine anything better? Those are all my favorites!!

Fitness Friday Spotlight: On Pointe Pilates

Pilates is one of my go-to workouts. Of everything I’ve tried over the years this is what has helped my back the most and what has shaped my body the best. And while Glow is my local yoga & Pilates studio, it’s always fun to try out a new class when the opportunity arises.

I was excited to put on my Lulu and head to the Marina for a seriously killer class at On Pointe Training. Started by a dancer, this class was the perfect combination of stretching, resistance training, and core work.

The studio is nestled between restaurants and little shops on a low-key, tree-lined street in the Marina-Cow Hollow area of San Francisco. The space is newly remodeled and filled with shiny new equipment, smelling faintly of lavender.

And the mirrored wall along one side gives the narrow space additional depth and promotes the feeling of being in a ballet studio. A feeling, I for one, love!

And of course a workout wouldn’t be complete without a tasty snack! On my walk home I munched on a California Suncake. These tasty little babies are nutrient dense and delicious, the perfect portable snack.

Tell me – Have YOU tried a Pilates reformer class?
