November 2014 Round-Up

Can you BELIEVE that there’s only a month left in 2014? I’m in awe of how fast this year has flown past. While 2013 was a heartbreaker with some tough-fought lessons and a great deal of change, 2014 has been nothing short of amazing.

I couldn’t be more grateful for all of the wonderful people in my life, the amazing city that I live in, the breathtaking adventures I’ve been on, or the education this year has given me.

Can’t wait to see how fabulous December is!

November 2014 Round-Up

Fashion:

November was a fashion-heavy month in 2013 and 2014. I was thrilled to show off my collaborations with Studio 15, Style Lend, and San Francisco-based charity start-up ModaVive.

Food:

Despite my seemingly non-stop travel schedule I’ve been pretty diligent about my eating habits. My number one tip is to pack snacks and plane food before heading to the airport – I’m less likely to make poor choices if I’m not starving.

Want more travel tips? Check out my Traveling post on packing, food, water, and combating jetlag.

Fitness:

Consistency is key! And while I may not have branched out or taken as many classes as I wanted this month, I was very consistent about getting in at least one workout a day and supplementing it with walking.

New December 2014 Goals

Fashion:

The rain has finally arrived! Water-starved California has been under siege for the better part of a two weeks and while it’s great to see my city coming back to life, the shift in weather definitely requires a change in my day-to-day style choices.

It’s all about working my Hunter Boots and Nine West Over-The-Knee Boots into my outfits – Lots of slim pants, oversized knits, and outerwear.

Food:

After a quick trip to Los Angeles this weekend I’m in San Francisco for the rest of the year and looking forward to getting back into the kitchen. I’ve bookmarked tons of recipes for soups, slow cooker recipes, and baked treats to try this month!

Fitness:

I was a little disappointed not to give paddle boarding a try while I was in Hawaii, but the whole trip reaffirmed my excitement for trying new activities and I’m definitely going to try to keep this up next year!

2014 Bucket List:

  1. Try a new class/physical activity – Boxing is a rush, can’t recommend it highly enough!
  2. Publish my writing – I’ve been so focused on magazine and blog pieces the past few months that I decide to focus on my other writing this month and I started working on one of my short stories which felt amazing.
  3. Travel – This month I headed to Albuquerque for a family birthday weekend as well as an impromptu trip to Maui with friends.
  4. Broaden my educational horizons – I’m awful at languages but got the bug this month and have been rereading some of my French and Italian textbooks. I should break out my old Greek books to prepare for my next overseas trip!
  5. Prioritize friendship – It was a complete honor to run off to Maui with one of my college best friends to watch her marry the love of her life this month. Such a once in a lifetime experience!

October 2014 Round-Up

Of 2014, October is the month than rushed past the fastest. I adore this time of year and wish I had been able to savor October a little more, but that doesn’t make it any less amazing, or make me any less excited for November and December. This time of year is always a blur so I’m heading into the last two months with the goal of really stopping to smell the roses the evergreens.

October 2014 Round-Up

Fashion:

Gearing up for Fall fashion is one of my favorite traditional each year – Rearranging my closet, prepping my outerwear & accessories, picking up some fabulous new pieces for the season. A trip to New York really got me in the mood – There’s something about those crisp days and seeing the leaves turn that makes Fall seem a little more magically. I’ll be sharing some photographs from my trip with Studi0 15 NYC and Style Lend soon so stay tuned!

Food:

Between weekend trips this month I spent some much-needed quality time in my kitchen. Not only did I make my favorite soup and break out the slow cooker – But I also tried out some tasty pumpkin recipes this month.

Fitness:

October was a big month on the fitness front for MCLV – Not only did I get in some great workouts and give BodyFi’s TRX class a try this month, I was also THRILLED to team up with two brands that I love to show off their Fall workout gear collections. Check out my collaborations with Lululemon Athletica and PrAna – Which is YOUR favorite?

Fashion:

The crisp days of Fall are finally here and I plan to enjoy these chilly mornings with all of my sartorial favorites – From killer outwear to scarves & gloves to cozy layers.

Food:

With the holiday season nearly upon us it’s almost time for huge family meals, a nonstop parade of cocktail parties and dinners, and plenty of travel, house guests, and boozy late nights. My secret weapon for combating the crazy onslaught of calories is by following a healthy, extremely clean diet the rest of the time. Check out my Clean Green Eating to see how I’ll be eating most of the next two months.

Fitness:

When I’m traveling and when I’m stressed, exercise is my go-to coping mechanism. It helps center me, helps me work through feelings of frustration, and being as healthy as possible will help you avoid getting sick this season!

Here are my tips for staying healthy – Cold & Flu Season: How To Stay Healthy.

2014 Bucket List:

  1. Try a new class/physical activity – I’ve been trying to do at least a few Pilates classes a month this year, but I haven’t gotten around to trying Pilates reformer until this month. I was a little worried that my clumsiness would result in me wound up in the cables, but I survived unscathed and it was a great workout.
  2. Publish my writing – This month I had the third editorial that I styled published and I couldn’t be more excited for my next project!
  3. Travel – I spent a glorious Fall weekend in New York this month – It was a short, but much-needed trip.
  4. Broaden my educational horizons – I started a nutritional class this month and I’m really enjoying learning more about the food that I eat and how to give myself all the nutrients and vitamins that I need.
  5. Prioritize friendship – I realized recently that six people I know have moved from San Francisco to New York this year, so I’m planning some more trips out to visit and make sure that I keep these wonderful people in my life.

What’s YOUR favorite thing about this time of year?

May 2014 Round-Up

I started April’s Round-Up post with a little bit of whining… But I quickly admitted that while I was stressed and overworked, I was exactly as stressed and overworked as I’d made myself. And while I do have high expectations for my “free time” that means I also have the power to change the things that aren’t working.

My primary objective for May was to work on de-stressing which manifested itself in a couple of ways. Primarily by cleaning up my diet, focusing on “me” time, and giving myself the opportunity physically relax with massages, yoga, and meditation.

Read on to find out just how I did with these goals…

May 2014 Round-Up

Fashion:

In May I shared two extremely fun projects that I’d worked on with amazing local designers – Candice Cuoco of CCUOCO and Lan Jaenicke.

These designers’ styles are incredibly different – But both are talented, driven, intelligent San Francisco women that I’m thrilled to have met and gotten a chance to work with.

Food:

I started May with the ambitious goal of completing The Whole 30. However after two weeks I realized that I was making very few day-to-day changes since I eat such a clean diet already.

The only real change? Cutting sugar.

I had NO IDEA just how sneaky sugar was and this month turned me into a label-reading tornado. No – Most of the foods that I eat don’t have labels, but my supplements, protein powders, and a few of my indulgences do have labels and what I read was pretty horrifying.

Fitness:

During May my lower back injury gave me a little trouble so I focused on core – Lots of abdominal-centric workouts, Pilates, yoga, stretching & rolling. Maintenance isn’t my favorite activity, but having the pain decrease as I was diligent was very rewarding.

I was also honored to receive some goodies from California-based activewear company Ellie. Check out what I thought of their amazing pieces here – Workout Gear Spotlight: Ellie.

New June 2014 Goals

Fashion:

I recently shot another fun series with CCUOCO that I’m dying to share so stay tuned for more teasers and a full post to come!

I also have some local events and travel styles that I’m looking forward to sharing.

Food:

I’m determined to continue working my sugar consumption. I wish I could simply say that I’ll 100% cut sugar 100% of the time, but I’m going to try to approach this a bit more rationally. My goal is only fruit-based sugar Monday through Friday and very limited (1-2 servings) of sugar on weekends.

The very first thing I’m doing in June? Trying to recreate my favorite salad dressing without sugar!

Fitness:

After building up a strong core during May and doing TONS of walking/hiking, I’m hoping to branch out during June. Yoga and Pilates have become staples in my weekly routine and I’m hoping to try martial arts or boxing this month!

2014 Bucket List:

  1. Try a new class/physical activity – I was a hiking maniac in May. For me 7+ miles is a hike, even if it’s a concrete “city hike,” and I managed to squeeze in a few of these during May.
  2. Publish my writing – This month I got organized! I read through all of the novels & short stories that I’ve started over the years and worked on prioritizing the things that I want to focus on this year.
  3. Travel – This month I planned a trip to LA for June and NYC for August.
  4. Broaden my educational horizons – This month I researched a few courses that I’m interested in taking – Primarily on nutrition and relaxation techniques. I also signed up for a three-day retreat to learn more about meditation and yoga which I’m incredibly excited for & can’t wait to share my thoughts with you.
  5. Be a good friend – Both of my upcoming trips are to visit friends – Babies & weddings, I’m finally at that age!

How are YOU doing as we’re nearing the halfway point on 2014?

April 2014 Round-Up

Looking back at April the first emotion that comes to mind is stress. And kids, that’s not a good thing. Yes, there were amazing experiences and fun events and great times with friends – But in hindsight, it was an overwhelmingly stressful and anxiety inducing month.

And you know how that makes me feel? Like I need to find my Zen! And fast.

Therefore my primary directive for May will be getting back to life. That means yoga, meditation, journaling, relaxing, and making some time for myself. I love to be busy and I love the feeling of getting things done, but I need to learn to balance that with activities that keep me grounded, relaxed, and enjoying myself.

April 2014 Round-Up

Fashion:

April was a month filled with fashion fun – From killer events like the CCUOCO Diverge Runway Show to fun collaborations {LiveLoveModa, Studio 15 NYC & Lysse} to an amazing $500 Mother’s Day giveaway!

As for Street Style – This month I played with Olivia Pope inspired white coats, Spring sweaters, fun floral rompers, and denim in the form of my favorite jeans and chambray shirts. Spring and Fall are my favorite seasons from a sartorial standpoint and I’m thoroughly enjoying mixing & matching and breaking out fun Spring pieces right now.

Food:

After all my traveling in March it was great to get back into the kitchen. Not only did I try out some great new recipes and start adding superfoods to my daily diet, I also worked hard this month to cook for most of my meals. Limiting restaurant meals and take-up orders is an important part of my Clean Green Eating plan.

If you have a sweet tooth I highly recommend trying out my Raw Salted Caramel Chocolate Pecan Torte recipe or some of these delicious Banana Based Desserts.

Fitness:

With Spring break, Summer vacations, and warm weather on the horizon fitness and getting in bikini shape are the topics de jour right now. Rather than do bootcamps or crazy diets, my goal is to stay healthy year-around by following a consistent workout regime 7 healthy diet. Fashion:

While Spring in San Francisco isn’t always super Spring-y, the weather has been continually improving and I plan to take advantage of that as much as I can.

Dresses are a Spring staple for me but I’m also excited to break out some fun jumpsuits, rompers, and matching sets this month.

Food:

As I’m working on cleaning up my diet I’ve been thinking about protein and healthy fats as well as supplements so stay tuned for healthy protein-filled recipes and information on supplements and superfoods, as I embark on another Whole 30 adventure.

Fitness:

Spending my weekends in San Francisco rather than traveling has the advantage of giving me the time to try out some of the great classes and exercise trends here. I’m going to make trying new types of workouts a priority this month so expect some fun accounts of my fitness trials and hilarious Instagram shots of my adventures.

2014 Bucket List:

  1. Try a new class/physical activity – So far this year I’ve tried yoga, spin, and kayaking and in April I gave pilates another try. I hadn’t done mat since before my back injury and LOVED getting back into it!
  2. Publish my writing – During April I took on another freelance writing gig – And while publishing a story or working towards publishing a novel wasn’t the focus this month, I felt very productive/
  3. Travel – In April I got my wanderlust needs filled while still staying close to home with a fabulous, sun-filled girls trip to Los Angeles for Lucky Magazine’s Lucky FABB West Conference.
  4. Broaden my educational horizons – I’ve been indulging all of my passions this month on the reading front. In April I picked up No Meat Athlete: Run on Plants and Discover Your Fittest, Fastest, Happiest Self on plant-based diets & exercise as well as Everyone Wants to Be Me or Do Me: Tom and Lorenzo’s Fabulous and Opinionated Guide to Celebrity Life and Style – The first book from my favorite fashion blogger duo TLo.
  5. Be a good friend – In addition to seeing one of my besties in LA and having her visit in SF during April, I’m also planning a yoga retreat with with a girlfriend from college. Really looking forward to that one!

How was YOUR April? Are you feeling productive? Stressed? Excited?

March 2014 Round-Up

March was a fun-filled, hectic, amazing adventure.

This month I headed to New York for a fashion trip and killer shoot with Studio 15 NYC, before venturing down the coast of California to Capitola for a relaxing beach-side family weekend, after which I spent a fabulous three days in New Orleans. And now I’m gearing up for a jaunt to Los Angeles in a few days for Lucky Magazine’s Lucky FABB Conference.

Just writing about all of my adventures this month is a bit exhausting.

March 2014 Round-Up

Fashion:

March was all about getting ready for Spring – From checking out all the fabulous new hairstyles & updos & beauty, skin care & make-up to freshen up my look to Spring cleaning & home décor updates to falling in love with Spring 2014 fashion and trends like jumpsuits & rompers.

I mixed things up on the style front between flights as well. This month I wore everything from evening-ready faux leather leggings to a killer cobalt blue bodycon dress to a black & white printed pencil skirt.

I even had the honor of collaborating with the chic New York online dress boutique Studio 15 NYC for a fun series – You can check out the first post here.

Food:

March saw something exciting for me on the food front – My very first food photo shoot. Working with Jessica Michelle Photo we captured a healthy, delicious brunch spread. The first dish that I wrote about was one of my personal favorites – Cracking Cauliflower. I can’t wait to share the rest – Including some sinfully delicious desserts you’ll love!

Fitness:

Despite a crazy travel schedule I did a great job of staying on top of fitness this month. While yoga, sadly, fell to the wayside, I manages to consistently get to the gym, walk, and even got in a few short runs.

New April 2014 Goals

Fashion:

Since March was so go-go-go I’m looking forward to spending some more time in San Francisco during April. After a fabulous, fashion-filled weekend in LA for Lucky FABB of course! 🙂 Stay tuned for some fun collaborations with local San Francisco brands & stores this month – I’ll be posting sneak peeks on Instagram so be sure to follow MCLV there!

Food:

While I’m looking forward to sleeping in my own cozy bed this month, I’m even more excited to get busy in my kitchen! I’ll be cooking up a storm and sharing the fruits of my labors so keep an eye out for some tasty recipes & sweet treats to use up all of this gorgeous Spring produce that’s hitting stores and farmers markets right now.

Fitness:

Gym time is great but getting back into my favorite yoga studio on a more regular basis is going to make April positively blissful. I’ve talked about it before {Motivation & Midday Workouts} but planning your workouts and fitness routine in advance can really help you stick to your goals. I’ve already blocked off two days a week for yoga for the month of April!

  5. Be a good friend – I headed to NOLA for my high school best friend’s bachelor party this month. It was an amazing trip – Great group of people, much-needed fun & frivolity, delicious food, amazing sites, and some really relaxing and educational time spent wandering around the beautiful city.
