Summer Fitness | Outdoor Workouts

One of the best parts of Summer is being able to get outside for fun workouts. It’s always nice to mix things up and try new activities, and this is definitely the season for it!

Leggings – Nike

Running Shoes – Saucony

Here are some of the outdoor activities that I look forward to each Summer and some of the workouts that I hope to try out this year:

  • Hiking – I love escaping the city for a hike in the Presidio or even further away. But it’s also fun to do long “city hikes” along the water. Nothing beats a gorgeous view of the bride!
  • Bike Riding – Don’t own a bike? No worries. Luckily there are bike share options like Ford GoBike
  • Running – I tried to run on a treadmill while I was on vacation and I only lasted a few minutes. I just can’t stand it. Getting outside and hiking a trail or path or running along the Embarcadero is one of my all-time favorite activities.
  • Bootcamps – Do some Googling or Yelping and you’ll find an afternoon or weekend bootcamp that’s held outside.
  • Swimming – If you don’t have a pool nearby, you can swim in lakes, rivers, or the ocean. I loved my daily swims while I was recently on vacation and can’t wait to start spending weekends up at the lake. Swimming is a great workout and very low impact.
  • Yoga – A yoga session on the beach or in a meadow or by a lake is a wonderful way to greet the day. If you can’t find a studio that offers outdoor classes, you can just bring you phone and a YouTube video to your favorite spot for a solo session.
  • Watersports – Swimming is a great workout, but so is paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing. You can do all three on lakes, rivers, or at the ocean. Or even in a pool! They’re great for the core and toning your arms.

What’s YOUR favorite outdoor workout?

Summer Loving | Getting Ready for Summer

Even more so than any other time of year, this one means baring your skin, which has a lot of side effects. You want to feel confident and healthy, you want your skin to glow, and you want to feel like you’re setting off your figure in flattering way that makes you feel great.

Summer Body:

Time to start mixing up your workouts and try something new! If you started 2017 with some workout goals you may notice that you’re starting to plateau right about now.

That means it’s the optimal time to try a new workout or class, mix up your programing, or try an online fitness challenge.

I, for one, switched up my weight lifting program for bodyweight circuits, swimming, running, and a weekly barre class. Not only does this keep my body from plateauing, it keeps me engaged and having fun. And that’s the easiest way to stick to a fitness routine!

Summer Skin:

With sun, sweat, salt, and water coming your way – You want you skin to be healthy, healthy, healthy going into warmer days.

A lightweight, but effective skin care routine is a must, and you should start auditioning some sunscreen brands for your adventures.

I’ve covered my beauty routine, favorite masks, and travel essentials, so check out the posts below:

Summer Wardrobe:

I have under-bed bins for my warm weather clothes – From swimsuits and cover-ups to skirts, dresses, and sarongs. In the past I’ve chosen classic colors and styles and well-made products, so I can go back to them year-after-year. Striped shirts, floral maxi dresses & skirts, patterned scarves, Jackie-O sunglasses, oversized denim shirts, nude sandals, and wide-brimmed hats are just a few of my staples.

While I’ll rely on my basics for the bulk of my dressing needs, I’ll also add a new piece or accessory or in-style color each season to keep things fresh.

For this season I’m eyeing new espadrille flats, some neutral-hued slides, and a colorful cuff bracelet.

How do YOU approach getting ready for Summer? Any suggestions?

Transition Dressing: Summer to Fall

While I still have some fun Summer-like activities on the horizon, I’ve also got my eye on Fall style.

Why? Well here in San Francisco “Summer” is a fluid concept – We go from fog and wind to rain to shirtless-people-in-the-park warm in a given week.

Consistent we are not.

Plus, more importantly, I adore Fall fashion. It’s my favorite sartorial season so read on for some of my picks for this season and tips for how to stylishly transition from one season to the next.

Ponchos:

Ponchos took a chic spin in recent seasons – These go-with-everything layering pieces are a must for Fall this year.

They’re the perfect cover-up for windy days and go great with jeans or slim fitting pants. Try pairing a printed on with jeans and over-the-knee boots for a fun, modern look.

Some of my top picks?

Capes:

Capes can be bold and dramatic, or perfectly every day. This slit sleeved cape-blazer has been a go-to for me the last year.

Want to make an entrance? Try a sweeping silhouette or bold print like the one pictured above. Want a simpler version for topping off your after-work style or putting a finishing touch on your weekend-issued LBD? Try a sleek black version like this DKNY number.

Blanket Scarves:

Somewhere between a scarf and a cape or poncho is this season’s blanket scarf phenomenon. Wear them however you like, they offer warmth and a much needed versatility for the season.

Try a printed version, a gorgeous Fall-ready shade, or a sleek black that’ll go with anything.
