Skin Care Junkie | My Favorite Sunscreens 2020

After sharing my favorite cleansers of 2020, I thought I’d share my suncreen picks as well. The number one thing that you can do to protect your skin and reduce the signs of aging is wear sunscreen every single day. This was one of the lessons that my mom taught me and which I learned the value of over the course of my 20’s and 30’s.

There are two types of sunscreen – Mineral and chemical. And there is A LOT of news and information out there on which is better, what they do differently for your skin, and what product you should choose.

The truth of the matter is, however, that you should pick whatever sunscreen you will wear. If you don’t like the formulation or the white caste or the smell, you won’t wear it, so it doesn’t matter if it’s “better” than another sunscreen.

That being said, I do have fairly strong preferences and I like lightweight formulations that don’t feel oily or greasy. Below are my current favorites:

Tinted Sunscreens:

A few notes on sunscreen:

(1) Be sure to spread it on your neck and bring the product down to your decollete. Also, be sure that you cleanse those areas at the end of the day!

(2) I know the eye area is sensitive, but it’s also the thinnest skin on the face, so you want to be sure to get your sunscreen under there.

What’s YOUR favorite sunscreen?

Reef Safe Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a topic that’s near and dear to my heart. This is, without a doubt, the best skin care tip my mom ever gave me – Wear sunscreen every day.

And while finding the perfect daily and workout suncreens are important – Origins Plantscription Anti-Aging SFP and FRE Skin Care for me – There’s also another variety that you should be paying attention to these days. And that’s using reef safe products when you’re in the ocean.

As far as I’m concerned, this is non-negotiable. This is especially close to home for me because I’m a diver, so I see the reefs and plants and animals that are being affected by our products in their water.

So that you can make informed and educated decisions when it comes to your purchases, here’s a list of great products and some links and reading materials in case you need some convincing. One of the major ingredients to avoid is Oxybenzone.

Badger Balm offers botanical-based products with minimal ingredients and has a few formulations as well – Such as Sport, Kids, and Baby.

Let’s Talk About: Sunscreen

Sunscreen is one of those things that your mother has been harassing gently reminding you about for years. And just like sensible shoes and higher thread-count sheets, she is totally right. The huge bummer about sunscreen is that you often times don’t realize just how important it is until some damage – Either major or minor – Has already been done.

It’s preventative – So start early babies, start early!

So what are we going to talk about today? My favorite brands, my picks for different kinds of days, and my routine.

Daily:

I wear it every single day. Moisturizer, eye cream, and sunscreen – That’s my skin care routine each morning. Even for long work days when it’s dark when I leave for the office and dark when I get home.

It doesn’t matter that I’m never in direct sunlight, sunscreen is still a vital part of my daily routine.

But since I’m not out running around in the sun, I choose a slightly less heavy-duty variety. I change products fairly regularly, but go back to some standbys between new trials, so here are some of my favorites:

Outdoor Days:

When I’m getting sweaty outside I like to amp things up, so here are my picks for running days, long hikes, and hanging outside on warmer weekends.

Vacation:

When I’m on vacay somewhere warm, humid, or tropical, I like to step up my skin care game. Traveling itself is drying and rough on your skin, so I like to give my skin some additional TLC while I’m also protecting it.

Tell me about YOUR sunscreen routine! What’s your favorite brand or product that I should try?
