MCLV Travel Diary | Vacation Planning

It’s nearly that time.

The weather is starting to warm up. You’re starting to have (more) trouble concentrating at your desk. Social media is filled with beautiful people posing in beautiful locations… That means time for Summer vacation!

So, as we’re heading into vacation season, I thought I’d do a series of posts to help you prepare, pack, and execute a killer trip. There’s nothing worse than forgetting a vital step in the process and feeling like your trip is ruined.

Handbag – Givenchy Antigona Satchel

Striped Bikini – Polo Ralph Lauren

Black Straw Hat – Ted Baker London

There’s lots to cover, so let’s get going!

Travel Documents:

You’ve planned the trip, now it’s time to make sure you can get there!

  • Photo ID and/or passport {make sure they aren’t expiring within 6 months of your trip!}
  • If you’re renting a car, do you need an international drivers license?
  • Do you need a travel visa?
  • Will you be purchasing travel insurance?

Travel Warnings:

Before a trip to a new country, or even a new city in a country I’ve already been to, I like to do a few quick checks to make sure that I’m totally prepared.

Miscellaneous:

These may seem like no-brainers, but you’ll be glad that you made sure to check!

  • Weather – Be sure to check the weather! It’s easy to fall into the trap of “it’ll be warm” and not check the specifics. Especially when it comes to tropical locations, because being aware of storm and monsoon seasons can make all the difference in the world!
  • Food – I like to review the restaurants and shops near my accommodations before I leave using TripAdvisor. That way I know that I can find something to eat in a pinch. I also like to pack a snack bag for my trips.
  • Language – If you’re going somewhere that speaks a different language, it’s a good idea to learn a few helpful phrases. Apps like Duolingo are a great way to brush up on or learn bits of new language. Even if everyone is predominantly able to speak English, they’ll appreciate the occasional please and thank you in their native tongue.
  • Stay in Touch – I always use WhatsApp when I travel internationally, no data fees or international phone plans necessary, just download the app and text whenever you have WiFi.
  • Currency – Be sure to check on what the local currency is at your destination and do some research on the best exchange rates. Often times your bank will have a good rate and you can just use a local ATM. Which brings me to my last tip – Update your credit card company and/or bank with your plans so that you don’t get fraud alerts while you’re traveling.

Next up – Packing! Stay tuned for posts on packing your toiletries, clothes, and extras to make sure that you have everything you need, but aren’t bringing the whole house!

What’s YOUR most important item to tick off when you’re getting ready for a trip? Am I missing anything?

Vacation Fitness | Tips to Stay Healthy While Traveling

While it’s always fun to try a new workout regime or set a goal for yourself  in the gym to get ready for a big trip – You may also want to get in some fitness while you’re traveling.

Not only do I enjoy working out, and the ensuing endorphin high, but my body also benefits greatly from regular workouts, which isn’t something I want to let go of while I’m on the road.

Below are a few tips for fun, social ways you can get in some sneaky, or not so sneaky, fitness when you’re on vacation.

  1. Explore on Foot – When you’re visiting a new city, try exploring on foot to view the city from a different angle. You’ll get to sightsee and stay active.
  2. Bands – I usually travel with a resistance band in my suitcase. It takes up no room and you can do a full range of workouts. Check out these band workouts from Tone It Up here.
  3. Bodyweight Workouts – When I’m out-of-town and don’t have access to a gym, I’ll try to start the day with a short bodyweight workout. Push-ups, squats, mountain climbers, planks etc. You can get a full body workout in just a few minutes.
  4. Start Peddling – Renting a bike is a great way to see a new city and cover some serious mileage over the course of a day. Don’t forget your helmet!
  5. Water Sports – If you’re vacationing near a lake, river, or the ocean, you should check out what water sports are available. From swimming to water skiing to SCUBA diving, there’s a fun way to stay active in the water.
  6. Running – My favorite way to explore a new city is going for a run. London, Paris, Rome – I’ve run through them all. Especially in the morning, it’s such a beautiful way to see a place wake up. I love it when I’m escaping the city as well – Trail runs and hikes are a great way to see the local landscape.

What’s YOUR favorite way to stay fit while you’re on vacation?

This the fifth post in the Virgin Sport #GoFitYourself series. If you’re in the Bay Area, you should check out the Virgin Sport Fitness Festival in San Francisco this October. Haven’t heard about it yet? Check out the first post here – Virgin Sport San Francisco.

If you want to join me to run the SF Bay Half Marathon on October 15th I’m excited to say that I have a discount for anyone who wants to join!

Use “LAVIE” and you’ll get $10 off the cost of registration for the SF Bay Half Marathon.

Sigh up here!

Wanderlust: Summer Vacation Mode

I don’t know about you, but I start getting an itch to take a vacation when it’s been a few months. Especially this time of year. Summer has become one of my favorite times to travel – Whether it’s a long weekend away or a full-on international adventure.

I love everything about traveling. Packing your bags, getting a carry-on ready for an adventure, planning out a trip… I even love luggage and train stations and airports.

Visiting new places, making new memories, exploring new cultures, eating new foods, and meeting new people… What’s not to love?

So far, I’ve traveled to cities and countries in South East Asia, Western Europe, and both Central and South America. I tried to count them and I think I’ve tackled 12-13 countries to date.

Definitely time to try a new one. 🙂

To get you in the mood, here are some amazing shots of beautiful locations, ninja packing skills, and all sorts of stunning wanderlust inducing images to fuel your Friday day dreams!

MCLV Style: Backless Dress

During my recent trip to Crete {read my travel diary here} my suitcase was primarily made up of comfortable clothes and activewear {Spring Break: Packing}. The amazing trip consisted of daily runs, hiking, diving, and road trips, so there was little necessity for chic separates or little black dresses.

Scarf – Saako

What I couldn’t resist packing however was this sweet little backless dress from purplemaroon. This new San Francisco-based company has recently put out their first collection – A lovely round-up of easy separates and breezy dresses. Everything is simple, versatile, and easy to style. Three characteristics that I always look for when I’m shopping.

And what better way to make this beauty pop than with a scarf from Saako Designs, another SF-based company, and the most beautiful background imaginable?

In these shots I’m in front of the house we rented in the grape vine & olive tree covered hills above Heraklion in Crete.

And the very special bonus?

My father, a longtime lover of photography, decided to try his hand at fashion blogging photography, and captured this gorgeous dress for me. I’m not sure if I’ve posed for him since I was a sullen teenager who’s growl was practically coming through on film, but it was fun to twirl out on the hill while he snapped away.

How would YOU style this backless dress?
