After tackling the Fall basics that I was relying on earlier聽this season, I wanted to give you a peek into what’s in my closet for Winter 2018. There’s a lot of layering on top of the Fall pieces, but it’s still pretty simplified as I’m trying to create a more minimalist wardrobe for myself. {Which is, as I’m sure you can guess, an ongoing work-in-progress}
As I mentioned in the Fall Edition of my Wardrobe Essentials, my goal with this series is to help keep my closet and my day-to-day life simple. I was getting tired of all of the unnecessary extras and decided to launch a decluttering campaign for my life. And that trickled down into my closets and my fashion style.
I’ve always loved having great investment pieces, so it wasn’t much of a stress to simplify my approach to dressing a bit more, and I’ve really enjoyed the results. It probably helps that I wear a lot of black. 馃檪
My top three tips for preparing your wardrobe for a new season?
- Begin with a closet clean out. You don’t know what you’re working with or what you need or what should be replaced, until you clean things out.
- Stick to a palette. Whether its neutral shades or black or specific colors or prints, just find your personal sartorial palette. Once you know your hues, you can mix and match with ease.
- Practice one in, one out. That means not adding a new piece until you sell or donate an existing piece. This helps keep your wardrobe paired down and easy to navigate.
Without further ado, here are my minimalist essentials for Winter 2018.
- Boots – Tall boots are an essential for cold weather and I wear my flat Vince Camuto over-the-knee boots every single weekend in Fall and Winter. They work with dresses, skirts, and pants. And that’s what this kind of minimalist wardrobe is all about – Pieces that can work with multiple outfits most of the year.
- Booties – Ankle boots are another versatile piece that you can wear most of the year. Find a height that’s comfortable for you – I for one love these flat but still totally chic Chelsea Boots.
- Turtleneck – Turtlenecks have been everywhere the past few seasons and I couldn’t be happier. They’re comfortable, flattering, and a great day-to-night piece. Pair with jeans and booties during the day or tuck into a mini skirt and throw on your favorite OTK boots at night.
- Long-Sleeved T-Shirt – This is the ultimate layering piece so you should find a style that feels great when you put it on. I usually have one {or two} black t’s and a striped version on rotation during Fall and Winter. I have a long torso so I always go for tunic-length versions.
- Jeans – A comfy pair of jeans is a must. You just have to find your go-to style – I’m a fan of the ankle length slim cut varieties.
- Pants – In addition to a killer pair of jeans, a pair of slacks, faux leather pants, or trousers is perfect for building your minimal wardrobe. Try to find something that you can wear for day-to-night like these knit ponte pants or faux leather leggings.
- Overcoat – Finding a versatile, flattering coat for Winter is a Must. You’ll wear it every time you step outside so it’s important to find one that you love.
- Raincoat – If you live in a rainy climate a slicker is a good investment. On not-so-cold, but windy/rainy days, I always wear this Calvin Klein raincoat.
- Scarf – A cozy, oversized scarf is the ultimate Winter accessory!
