April Favorites: Workout Gear

After sharing my favorite healthy(ish) junk food last month – Today I’m going to focus on some of my favorite workout gear brands and products lately.

I like to mix up my workouts and in March and April I made some switches. I tried out the new-t0-me barre studio Avant-Barre, starting swimming, and signed up for the San Francisco Half Marathon this is Summer.

{Lululemon’s Tight Stuff, Adidas Neo & Victoria’s Secret Sports Caged Racerback Sports Bra}

Favorite Running Tights: I require two primary things from a pair of running tights – Pockets and a really fitted feel. Since discovering that my life is significantly better {shut up!} with side pockets on my running pants, I’ve tried a few brands. The best, by far, are Lululemon’s Tight Stuff. They’re so good that I have two pairs of the exact same tights.

Favorite Running Tank: I like longer, almost tunic length tank tops for running. They cover my long torso as well as my spandex-covered booty – So they’re a win-win. I adore Lucy’s Revolution Run Racerback Tank. Great quality and super comfortable.

Favorite Running Shoes: I switched over from Brooks to Saucony last year and I’m addicted. I love my Saucony Guide 9’s – They have a good amount of support and work well for street running.

Favorite Pants for Classes: Victoria’s Secret Sport has had a few recent home runs in the workout gear arena. And their Anytime High Rise Leggings is one of those wins. Thick, flattering, and comfortable. What more could a girl want?

Favorite Sports Bra for Classes: Another winner from VS Sport is their Caged Racerback Sports Bra. It’s seriously cute and the perfect low-intensity sports bra for a class with little to no bouncing. I love this style for barre classes!

Favorite Walking Shoes: I switch between my Adidas Neo’s in black and white and my Nike Flyknits for walking to and from work each day. I don’t wear either of these pairs to workout in though, they don’t offer my sad little feet enough cushioning.

What’s In My Gym Bag

Whether you’re grabbing a gym session before or after work, or heading to a studio for a class on a weekend, you need to have all your essentials on hand.

Just in case.

For me those essentials include everything from equipment and gear for my workout to my skin care and make-up for cleaning up after my sweat session.

Check out what’s in my new bag below!

I’ve used the cutest little retro Lacoste duffle bag for years but recently decided to upgrade to a new gym bag in the hopes of getting a big more space. Women’s Health recommended this Lole Nina Duffle Bag and I couldn’t be happier with it!

There’s enough room for shoes & a full outfit or two {I used to leave a pair of shoes at work since they didn’t fit in my bag}, plus there are compartments for everything from a water bottle to hair ties to beauty stuff. AND there’s a strap on top to secure your yoga mat. It’s genius!

Arm Band – I always carry my phone when I go running. Sometimes I’m using a running app or listening to music, I often stop to snap pictures for Instagram, and I always want to have a means of contacting the outside world just in case I hurt myself.

This oversized band is great for me since I have a Galaxy rather than a iPhone, plus I can put cash, an extra hair tie & chapstick inside.

Nike Visor – I’ve perfected the art of keeping my skin healthy during my outdoor runs. Aside from the prodigious application of sunscreen, I also rely on my trusty visor to keep my delicate facial skin shaded.

Shoes – For cross training, boxing, and any miscellaneous activities I wear Brooks Pure Flow. I’ve worn Brooks for years and every pair is somehow better than the last. For running I just got my first pair of Nike Free running shoes and I’m pretty smitten.

Sunscreen – I’ve mentioned it before – Vacation Beauty: 5 Must Have Products – But I really can’t get enough of Algenist’s Ultra Lightweight UV Defense Fluid with SPF 50. It’s super light, not at all greasy, and works like a charm.

Cleanser – Cleaning off your face & neck is important to keep your skin clear post-workout. I swear by these Josie Maran Bare Naked Wipes. They’re organic and have argan oil so they’re really moisturizing.

Dry Shampoo – I don’t wash my hair daily so I can’t go without dry shampoo after a sweat session. I love local brand Ziesche Modern Apothecary‘s dry shampoo – Vegan, made locally, and totally awesome!

Chapstick – I’m a Burt’s Bees girl and I go back and forth between Pink Grapefruit and Kokum Butter when I’m more in need of moisture.

Water Bottle – I keep water bottles everywhere and prefer glass and metal versions like this sleek Klean Kanteen and this fun glass Camelbak bottle.

Headphones – I prefer noise canceling ear buds and have gone through my fair share before finding Beats By Dre Ibeats which have lasts MUCH longer than any of their predecessors.

{Zella Live In Capris // Brooks PureFlow // Old Navy Active GoDRY You Don’t Know Squat Tank}

Whether you’re lifting weights or hitting the trails for a run, what’s on your feet can make or break your workout. I fell in love with Brooks running shoes years ago when I first got interested in running and I’ve tried their Eco Silence and PureFlow lines with great results. I wear these babies for everything, not just running though, they’re comfortable, eco-friendly, and have great traction.

Nordstrom’s Zella makes GREAT workout gear. I have a number of their pieces and one of my favorites are their Live In Capris. They fit like a dream and stay put during a killer workout.

I love fun tanks for working out and have a number of cute graphic tees from Old Navy including this You Don’t Know SQUAT number from their Active GoDRY Graphic Tank collection.

Workout Gear Spotlight: Lululemon Athletica

I’m a long-time Lululemon Athletica devotee. After discovering their killer capri-length leggings years ago I’ve kept a pair or two in my workout rotation. So when the fabulous ladies of the Grant Street location reached out and asked if I’d be interested in coming in to try on some of their new goodies I jumped at the chance!

We pulled a handful of pieces from the yoga and running collections that Lulu put out for Fall and I immediately fell in love with everything. When I choose workout gear it has a very specific purpose – It needs to keep up with me! I want to throw something on and not think about it again for an hour – It needs to move, feel great, and stay put.

Lulu has consistently lived up to those requirements and I wasn’t disappointed by these black & white pieces from the running collection. They have tons of fun prints and colors this season, but I found myself really liking the clean lines of these minimal pieces.

Workout Gear Spotlight: PrAna

It’s no secret that I love workout clothes. I’ve shared some of my favorites in the past, including Lorna Jane & Ellie, and I’ve talked about how I love using new gear as motivation to reach my fitness goals.

There are some things that I always look for when I’m picking out new clothes for the gym – Comfort is important, you want quality pieces that will hold up, and you want something flattering that you love to pull on.

I was recently introduced to a new kind of yoga clothing that not only meets all of my personal requirements, but also brings something new and fabulous to the table. PrAna offers organic fabrics, free-trade certified products, and sustainable production which means that not only are you getting great quality pieces, you’re also helping keep the environment safe while you shop.

In my book it doesn’t get much better than that!

If you’re in the Bay Area, I highly recommend checking out our local PrAna shops. The Fillmore Street store is even having an influencers event this coming Wednesday, October 8th from 4pm to 8pm – Stop by for a peek at the new collections and a chance to try out great new pieces on sale!
