Winter Fitness: Indoor Workouts

While there are many wonderful things about Winter, working out in the freezing cold isn’t something that most people enjoy or look forward to this time of year. Not only can cold temperatures and nasty weather kill your motivation, they can also be rough on your skin, hair, and health on top of everything else.

Indoor workouts to the rescue! Here are some fun ideas for keeping your fitness routine inside this season.

Bodyweight Circuits:

These do-anywhere circuits require no equipment and can be done anytime, any place. Mix & match moves to meet your needs – From push-ups, planks, and tricep dips to squats, donkey kicks, and bicycles. You can make a workout to target whichever muscle group needs working!

Classes:

Popping into the gym or you local YMCA for a class is a great way to get moving without freezing your booty off. Bonus – Most gyms will have killer deals this time of year, so shop around for the best bargain!

Not up to commit to a full membership at one of your nearby gyms? Try out a service like Class Pass where you can get access to tons of classes all over your city so that you can try everything that strikes your fancy. Yoga, kick boxing, Pilates… Whatever you’re in the mood for!

If you want to get your sweat on from the comfort or your own home, head online and see what’s available. You can find yoga, targeted circuit training, Pilates, dance, and so much more.

Comfort is paramount, I assure you.

Tone It Up // 7 Days of Workouts

While preparing for my Costa Rica adventure I wanted to make sure that I was at my best physically so that I could make the most out of my trip. When you’ve got consecutive days of white water rafting, horseback riding, zip lining, and surfing – You want to feel healthy & strong!

So how did I get ready for the trip?

I turned to the ladies of Tone It Up and their great available-online workouts, along with some other trainer’s workouts that I could mix in over the course of the week.

Read on for a breakdown of my workouts for the 7 days leading up to my trip!

The first bullet point for each day is my midday workout – Usually around 12pm – And those are traditionally 15-20 minute circuits plus stretching and rolling out. Classes, the second bullet each day, take place after work and are usually 45-60 minutes.

Yes, it is a lot of exercise, but I also didn’t just jump into it. I regularly do two-a-day workouts Monday through Friday and worked my way up to this kind of activity slowly. I also increase my food intake accordingly – Adding more snacks and increasing the caloric density of my meals.

My goal with sharing this list of workouts is to show you that everyone is different. My activity levels are fairly high, but that’s because (1) working out improves my back pain, and (2) I make fitness a huge priority in life. Like I said in my Social Fitness & Workout Dates post, I enjoy meeting friends for workout classes or hikes instead of dinner or cocktails.

I prioritize my health and my body before a lot of social obligations, which isn’t to say that’s the only approach, it is just how I’m doing things at this point.

A Week of Workouts

I get lots of questions about my workout regime and, especially, how I stay active with such a packed schedule.

Tip #1 is to prioritize yourself. It seems impossible when you’re being pulled in a million directions, have an endless To Do List, and a calendar that leaves no time for anything new.

But the sad truth is that none of that is going to change. However, just think about how much better you’ll be able to meet those challenges if you’re at your healthiest!

To help give you guys a peek into my day-to-day routine and approach to healthy living & working out, I decided to keep track of my workouts for the last week in February as I finished up the Tone It Up 8 Week 2016 Challenge and started training for the Presidio 10 Miler. This will give you an idea of how I squeeze things in when I’m utterly slammed during the week.

Workout Round-Up

It’s virtually impossible for me to force myself to do something that I don’t want to do. That statement can be applied to everything from attending events to dieting to working out.

Luckily for me, I love to work out. But that doesn’t mean that I always want to do what’s on the schedule. I’ve been walking to Pilates only to decide I need to go run stairs. So to the stairs I go!

Here are some of the workouts that are currently on repeat for me:

Running: While I rarely have time to run off into the Presidio and get lost these days, I’ve been making time for 3 milers a few times a week. From running stairs at Coit Tower to running intervals down the Embarcadero, it’s the perfect way to get outside and enjoy the gorgeous Fall weather.

Pilates: Since injuring my back in college I’ve tried a number of workouts and can, without a doubt, that Pilates is what changed my body and general back health the most. I’ve tried reformer at On Pointe and the killer Pilates class at Glow.

Yoga: For me yoga is less of a workout and more of a sanity saver. The more stressed I am, the more I need yoga in my life. That being said, it’s also amazingly rejuvenating when your body is sore from overdoing it at the gym. My go-to location is Glow Yoga on Washington Square Park.

Weights: During the week I do 2-3 weight training sessions, usually broken out into legs/booty and arms/back. One of the things that I love about these workouts are how infinite the combinations are and how versatile the moves can be.

Don’t have weights? Use bodyweight! Bored of squats? Try lunges & box jumps!

3 Minute Thighs // 7 Minute HIIT Workout: These two baby workouts from Tone It Up are perfect when you swear you’re too busy to workout. A short little sweat session that improves your mood and gives you just the boost you need!

6 Minute Sexy Arms: The quick and fun workouts from Blogilates are GREAT when you don’t have time for an hour at the gym. Most can be done at home (or in your hotel room) so they’re incredibly convenient.

Tara Stiles: These YouTube videos are a MUST whether I’m traveling or just don’t have time for a full class. Depending on how much time I have and what my goal is (stretching, relaxing, strengthening…) I just search her videos for the perfect one.
