MCLV Style: Athleisure

The athleisure trend that has emerged over the last few seasons has been nothing short of a breath of fresh air for fashion lovers.

You want us to wear slip-ons or sneakers instead of four inch stiletto heels? Ok!

You want us to wear silky track pants or a cozy tunic and leggings to go out to brunch? Count me in!

And while adopting all of the tenets of the athleisure faith full time isn’t an option due to, you know, dress codes, it has been a really fun style to try on for size.

I feel like there’s more freedom with fashion in general these days, but the athleisure trend means imposing an even more casual and comfortable aspect in daily dress that just hasn’t been there before for women.

Let me add this caveat, however. I’m not here to sign off on leggings-instead-of-pants, your booty should still be covered if you’re not heading directly to your local Crunch for a workout.

But a pair of sleek leggings paired with an oversized tunic for a look that’s part 90’s and part off-duty ballerina? Hell yes!

To me, the look I’m sharing here is the perfect one for a part-active, and part-lazy Sunday. You can wake up, get dressed, walk to yoga class, and then grab brunch with friends. Maybe wander to the Farmer’s Market or pick up your favorite blooms at your local florist afterwards… {Can you tell I’m having a moment here daydreaming about my perfect Sunday?}

It’s flattering and street-appropriate, perfectly functional for a workout, and still totally cute.

Active Rest Days

I don’t take rest days.

Yes, I can hear the collective gasp of horror by those who have been trained or taught that rest days are MUST.

As I discussed in my Wellness Versus Labels post, I think it’s important to take a journey of self discovery to determine what the best diet & fitness regime are for you. And I’ve spent the last few years trying different things to see what works best for me.

And believe me, this isn’t just because I’m a Fitness Addict.

In my case it’s actually because my body needs activity on a daily basis to keep my pain levels down. Enter – Active Rest Days.

So what does this entail? No actual workouts or runs, but I find a way to move in different ways to keep my whole body healthy and engaged.

Yes, I allow myself to recover from my workouts – That’s VITAL – But I play things by ear and listen to my body. For me, it’s important to keep moving.

My favorite Active Rest Activities are:

  • Walking or Hiking
  • Stretching
  • Light Yoga {a 15 minute Tara Stiles YouTube video is perfection or try a mellow 50 minute flow class}

A Week of Workouts

I get lots of questions about my workout regime and, especially, how I stay active with such a packed schedule.

Tip #1 is to prioritize yourself. It seems impossible when you’re being pulled in a million directions, have an endless To Do List, and a calendar that leaves no time for anything new.

But the sad truth is that none of that is going to change. However, just think about how much better you’ll be able to meet those challenges if you’re at your healthiest!

To help give you guys a peek into my day-to-day routine and approach to healthy living & working out, I decided to keep track of my workouts for the last week in February as I finished up the Tone It Up 8 Week 2016 Challenge and started training for the Presidio 10 Miler. This will give you an idea of how I squeeze things in when I’m utterly slammed during the week.

Wednesday:

  • Midday – Tone It Up arms, abs & booty
  • After Work – Barre Class

Thursday:

  • Midday – Tone It Up total body
  • After Work – 4 Mile run

Friday:

  • Midday – HIIT
  • After Work – Rest

Saturday:

  • 6 Mile run
  • Stretching, rolling & short yoga workout

Sunday:

  • Walking
  • 20 Minute core workout
